Hey–As I mentioned in another thread, I’m moving to St Paul (from the South) in a couple of months, for college (so I guess if you have anything good to say about Macalester College, say it here!) and I’m wondering if you have Krispy Kreme donuts there.
Yeah it’s a good college and yes we have them. Sometimes. Probably.
No Krispy Kremes here.
Mac is a good school. Spendy tuition, I believe. Good luck.
PS- The best deli in St. Paul is called (get this) Cecil’s!
With a name like that, how can they go wrong?
No Krispy Kreme. The nearest one is in Dubuque, believe me, we looked. When I was enrolled at UVA and my husband was still here, I used to bring a box with me everytime I came home. I’d stop in on my way to the airport, and he’d get them fresh. (For some reason, I kept getting stopped by security ;))
You’ll probably like St. Paul. Mac is a good school in a nice neighborhood. Look out for winter! I moved north from Alabama, and it nearly killed me. The trick is to get out and do stuff. Go cross-country skiing, learn to snowshoe, do what it takes to get out, and then you learn to love it.
Have fun!
If you don’t go out and do stuff in the winter, may I suggest staying in, and posting new experiences to the Funny Things Said While Lovemaking thread.
When are you planning on moving up here, we could try to get a few dopers together…
What rubesbaby said.
Thanks AuntieCanty, I didn’t want to speak for you, but I am pretty much up for a get together any time.
I’m game, if I’m in town.
Hey! I’m only three or so hours away. I would definitely drive up for a gathering.
::still sad about missing the Chicago party::
Me too! I’m in Minneapolis.
I know of a place closer than Dubuque where you can get Krispy Kremes…of course, you’d still have to go to Iowa. The Kum & Go stores in Mason City, IA has them. Make it to Mason City, and it’s simple to find a Kum & Go…I swear, you can’t throw a rock in that town without hitting one.
I’ve spent the last year bouncing between Corpus Christi and Minneapolis… both Krispy Kreme-free Zones, alas!
ThisYearsGirl, for what it’s worth, the smartest and overall best Evil Minion I ever had went to Macalester and she loved it.
So when and where is the party?
On the east side of Minneapolis, near Lake Nokomis, you’ll find a place called Mello-Glaze Donuts…highly recommended.
Wow, more people from Minneapolis & St Paul than I would have expected.
Yes, Mac is a good school in a nice neighborhood. A friend of mine graduated from their a few years ago. Got job offers gallore when she finally finished. Now a lawyer and great connection for my legal issues.
Keep in mind though, St. Paul is a ghost to at night. Plan to check out either Uptown or downtown Minneapolis for the late-night Fun. On the other hand, Grand Ave in St Paul can get lively. Don’t forget to go to Sweeney’s!! One of my all-time favorite neighborhood bars. It can’t be beat.
Finally, our winter. Over-rated sensationalist crappola from visitors. A few nasty days, but all in all a fun time. Besides, it keeps the riff-raff out. And, aparently, Krispy-Kreme (sp?). None to speak of.
All that aside, you’ll enjoy it, trust me.
Hey–decided to revive this old thread with another question about Minnesota–what kind of public transportation system does the city have?
pretty sucky.
It’s mostly by bus. In fact, it’s only by bus. No train, subway, etc… The bus is O.K., if a bit slow. I used it extensively during my tenure at the University of Minnesota. Quite good there, but around town is another matter.
If your on campus you should be fine walking around to the important places. Outside of that, however, it’s a commuter town. People drive everywhere.
If you don’t have a car find someone who does. It’s really that bad.
On a positive note, the weather here’s been great. You’ll really enjoy the lakes and the outdoor activities that have gone into full swing now. The people here go nuts when it gets nice out. Post a note when you arrive and myself and others can fill you in on the happenings around town.
This is off-topic, but I received it in an email and thought you other Minnesotans might get a kick out of it…
HOW MANY MINNESOTA COLLEGE STUDENTS DOES IT TAKE TO CHANGE A LIGHT BULB?
At Carleton, it takes two. One to change the bulb and one more to explain how they did it every bit as well as any Ivy Leaguer.
At Hamline, it takes three. One to change the bulb and two to phone a friend at St. John’s to get instructions.
At Macalester, it takes four. One to screw in the bulb and three to figure out how to get high off the old one.
At St. Mary’s, it takes five. One to change it and four to talk about how they would have done it in Chicago.
At Gustavus, it takes six. One to change it, two to mix the drinks and three to find the perfect “J. Crew” outfit to wear for the occasion.
At Augsburg, it takes seven and each one gets four semester credit hours for it.
At St. Thomas, it takes eight. One to change it and 7 to bitch about how they wouldn’t have gone to St. John’s/St. Ben’s even if they could have gotten in.
At Concordia, it takes ten. One to figure out how to screw it in, nine to find an ugly enough lampshade to match their school colors.
At St. Olaf, it takes 100. One to change it, 49 to talk about how they do it better than Carleton, and 50 who realize it’s all a lie.
At Bethel, it takes none. They don’t screw.
At St. John’s, it takes 3, one to change the light bulb and 2 to get behind him when he drops it and has to bend over.
At St. Ben’s, it takes 4, one to change the light bulb and 3 to figure out how it will help them meet their future husband.
At Mankato State University, it takes 1, but it takes him 6 years.
At St. Cloud State University, “who gives a shit…let’s drink!”
At Winona State University, it takes 3, if they’re lucky one of them has taken the course at Rochester Community College.
At Moorhead State University, it takes 3, one to change it and 2 to crack under the pressure.
At Bemidji State University, none, Bemidji doesn’t have electricity yet.
At University of MN Duluth, the whole student body, there’s nothing else to do in Duluth on the weekends.
At Universtiy of MN Morris, it takes 1, he just holds the bulb and waits for the world to revolve around him.
At the University of MN St Paul, none, down town St. Paul looks better in the dark.
At the University of MN Twin Cities, Four…one to change the bulb, and three to write up a complaint to the Board of directors stating that they could have gone to a better school If they had wanted.
