Question for upstate New Yorkers and Quebecers

Back in '88, I was driving from Montreal to Vermont via Lake Champlain, and passed through one town (actually a medium-sized city) on the US side of the border, on the outskirts of which was a SAC B-47 parked right alongside the main highway.

I’ve tried finding the spot on maps and on Google Earth, but no luck so far. Does anyone know what city this was and if the monument is still there?

This B-47 is on display at Little Rock AFB in Arkansas:

I would guess you were passing by the Plattsburgh Air Force Base. Plattsburgh is a medium-size city near the Canadian border and apparently there was a B-47 at the base.

That looks like it. Thank you!

Yes, that’s Plattsburgh. The air base closed in 1995. Part of the property is now being used for industry. The airstrips are now a commercial airport.

You were driving via the lake? Musta been one of them new car-boats.

I, uh, took a ferry across it. They run quite often.

That’s riding, though, not driving. Unless they let you do laps along the guardrail during the crossing.

Mapmaking sites include the ferry as part of the drive from New York to Vermont. Unless you purposely go around (which is a bit longer of a drive, but it’s super fun), it’s the quickest way across.

It depends where you’re going in Vermont. If it’s someplace like Middlebury or Rutland, the best route is to drive down through NY and cross over the bridge at Crown Point.
