Americans, at least, are getting shorter, not taller.
To answer the OP, I’m 6’5" and have no trouble finding upscale clothes. Casual is pretty easy too, but L.L. Bean’s tall shirt sizes make it ridiculously easy.
My husband is 6’7" and average build… we don’t seem to have a problem finding pants/shirts/shoes for him. He wears a 2X in tops and a 38" x 34" pants, size 13 shoe. Oddly enough he rarely has problems finding clothes! Although, much of his shopping he does online at Eddie Baue
I’m 6’6" and pants aren’t too much of a problem I wear a 36x34 but my thighs are so big from years of squats. I wear 38-40 depending on the brand and even then it can be tight. Shoes aren’t a problem for the most part I wear 15s and I managed to find a pair of Vans in my size the other day at the mall but in general I just order off the internet since it isn’t worth the time looking for the 1 pair of 15s that have that doesn’t look horrible.
Shirts though sucks. Like others have commented it wasn’t so bad shopping when I big since I could just buy an extra X on my shirts and they would be long enough for the most part. Now that I’ve lost a bunch of weight my shirts are either long enough and huge or barely reach my pants and fit. There is the third category where I can find tall shirts but most of those are built for beanpoles and I can’t fit my 60" chest in them. The good news is that I don’t have to wait for big and tall shops I can go into anything and just look for talls now that I’m in to X and 2X LTs.
I’m 6’6", take 42x34 jeans and they were damn near impossible to find til I discovered Harley Davidson specializes in…larger folks. But they were pricey.
Then I discovered Costco sells Kirkland jeans in my size for $12 a pair. Squealed and screamed like a little girl, I did!
I am a mere 6’2", which puts me among the runts in this thread, I guess. But I have a 36" inseam and a 34" waist - pants are almost impossible to find in actual stores. JC Penney’s carries them, I’ve found. For a long time though, I just ordered from Old Navy online - 36" inseam available in almost everything they sold. Once they discontinued the type of jeans I liked, I had to go hunting elsewhere. Kohl’s online also had Levi’s that fit.
I think I envy the hell out of you taller guys with your 34" inseams.
I’ve found that with trousers, I have to go up a waist size.
But my real problem is with shoes. Nobody does a UK size 13 or 14 (US 14 or 15) in a B fitting (narrow at that size is classed as F or G). Not without being very pricey anyway.
Very hard for me to find stuff that fits in stores. Lots of stores stop at 35" sleeves and 34" inseams. And the 34" inseams sell out pretty fast. (You would think stores would get the hint that there are a few of us tall guys out here.)
Nordstrom sometimes has things that will fit, but I generally have to order from catalogs or online.
The “big and tall” shops can fit me, but I hate the bland, boring styles usually found in such shops. It is really hard finding cool or interesting clothes made for a tall man.
6’6". You tend to buy 4 of one thing when you find something that fits. Old Navy usually has jeans that are almost long enough, but strangely I find that longer inseams are less common at bigger waistlines than at smaller ones (and 36 inseams are as rare as hen’s teeth). Everyone with a 36 inch waist is a short, fat guy, apparently.
Shoes (and socks) are my biggest issue. Shirts aren’t that bad an issue, though sleeve length is tough, and any shrinkage in sweaters renders something unwearable because of that.
The Mister is 6’6" (2 m) and prefers 36" inseams, which are extremely difficult to find around here. (Which I find odd. I used to work at a clothing store, and we had 36 x 36s in Levis all the damn time. Not so much anymore, I guess.)
I used to buy all his clothes from Eddie Bauer, as their inseams go to 37" (35" cuffed; or they’ll leave them unfinished for you to tailor yourself) and their clothes match our style. I’ve also shopped at Lands End and LL Bean, but Eddie Bauer’s styles match Mr. Snicks better. He used to shop at Nordstrom, but last time we went there to look for pants, they were godawful expensive (apparently they didn’t used to be; he’d go there for Levis or such).
However, we stopped at Old Navy, partially out of simple desperation (“well, we’ll try it”) and they had tons of 36 x 36s. In chinos (which he prefers), jeans, cargo pants, what have you. We haven’t been back - we stocked up - but I’m certainly going to be checking them out more often when he needs new clothes.
As for shirts/sweaters, he doesn’t wear a ton of button down dress shirts, but I believe he’s a 37" there as well. I generally buy him XL or XXL, and always look for XLTs. Again, they can be hard to find, but Eddie Bauer stores generally have them, as well as their catalogs. Haven’t bought him a dress shirt in a while; I can’t speak to how difficult it is to find these. I suppose that’ll be a battle I’ll need to fight sometime in the future.
His shoe size is fairly normal (12 or 13 I think), so that’s good.
Oh, and **GaryT’s **right. The & in “Big & Tall” is most definitely an AND operator: they really don’t have much for tall skinny guys (like my husband).
NinetyWt, you might want to check out the Duluth Trading Company for long tailed shirts. I’ve only heard their commercials - they’re hilarious - that claim they’ve got longer shirts; I haven’t shopped there and can’t speak to their offerings.
We get the Duluth catalog. It’s a riot. Their longer shirts eliminate “plumber’s crack,” they say — and have hilarious illustrations depicting the squatting plumber and the horrified housewife.
I’ve found that wally world stocks Wrangler’s in my size and larger, $15 or so per pair. If they’re good enough for Brett Favre, they’re good enough for me. Otherwise, I have to order pants in my size for the most part unless I’m in a Big & Tall store.
I don’t like Levi’s. They are expensive and don’t seem to last any longer than Wrangler’s.
Shirts are the worst. Like so many other people in this thread, I get most of my height in my torso and I need tall shirts if I want to tuck them in. I tend to not tuck in my Tshirts, so I can get away with them not being tall. But I wear polo’s for work. JC Penny usually has good deals on Tall Polo shirts. I usually get St. John’s Bay. Fortunately, I tend to get warm easily and almost always wear short sleeves. Whenever I have to wear a button down shirt that has sleeves that are too short, I roll them up to hide the fact.
I get the King Size catalog, but almost everything I’ve ordered from them has been crap. YMMV
I can usually find size 13 shoes just about everywhere, but most stores have a very limited selection in that size. So if there is a cool shoe in size 10 or 11, it probably won’t be in my size. I wear a Sketcher’s shoe for work that I can get at either JC Penny or at Zappos, whichever has it cheaper when I need to order.
If I find something that fits correctly and is comfortable, I will buy multiples of it, too.
Between your pants size and your user name, I suspect that you are my brother… any chance you’re in Kuwait right now?
(But my brother’s pants are easier to buy now than when he was younger and wore a 32w, 36l pants - Levi’s only, since he has a bit more butt than most guys. Pre-internet shopping was fun!)
My partner is 6’10" and very thin, and I learned long ago not to buy him any clothing other than ties. I know he buys things online, but not everything. Actually his biggest problem is underwear, but not because of his height.
6’5" here. I think Levis have changed slightly over the years. When I was 30 I wore 34x36 and could find them easily. In my early 40’s I went all Sponge Bob with 36x36 and they were pretty hard to find. Now I find that a 34 inseam fits as well as the 36 did and 36x34 are fairly easy to find.
I haven’t had to buy a dress shirt in years but I used to find 16.5x37 at Men’s Wearhouse easily. For casual long sleeves I’ve just accepted that they’ll come up short. I’m OK with shoes at UK 11.
What I’m struggling with right now is finding a small car that fits. So far I’ve tried:
Alpha Romeo Mito - bad head and leg room
VW Scirocco - bad headroom good legroom
Honda CRZ - bad headroom OK legroom
FIAT 500 - bad headroom OK legroom
Citroen DS3 - OK headroom bad legroom
BMW 1 Series - good head and legroom
I currently drive a 2001 left hand drive Smart and it has good legroom and great headroom, but I recently drove a 2010 RHD Smart and the legroom is not any good.
