I forgot the Mini. I drove the new Mini shortly after it came out here (UK) and it fits alright. I should probably start a ‘pick me a car’ thread instead of hijacking this one.
bump
New main squeeze is 6’6" (yikes!) and is ALL legs: 37" inseam. 38 inch waist when we met, has lost 15 pounds and without breaking a sweat and probably will lose another 15-20, putting him at about a 35" waist. So he’ll likely need 36x38 pants with a belt.
He wore Levi Big & Tall cargoes for years; they have since been discontinued (I’ve devoted many hours to locating the last remaining stock online, to no avail – if someone can, please let me know!). His last two pairs are starting to wear thin in the crotch in addition to becoming too baggy already from weight loss.
My lovely tailor, manna from heaven he is, told us to find LL Bean unfinished pants. They don’t seem to make them anymore. He also prefers a long rise – which these Eddie Bauer pants have. He’ll likely get 2 pairs but he’d really prefer cargo pants for everyday wear (he works from home 80% of the time and doesn’t want to wear sweatpants either).
So! Teeming millions, have you shopped for big & tall pants in the last 2 years? Specifically 1) Long rise 2) Unfinished or 38" inseam 3) Cargoes, if possible). What’s the skinny (har har, had to sneak that one in there) on tall pants?
Try www.6pm.com. They are the closeout arm of Zappos. You can get fantastic deals on larger sizes as they are often remaindered (ie unsold) as closeout items.
BF is 6’8". New Levis in his length are over $50. No trouble finding them on Ebay-he’s a contractor, so Levis are fine. There’s an online store called King Sized for a lot of the rest of it. They have good pocket t’s. They also have a lot of crap-made stuff, so don’t go for cheap.
What is his inseam, could you ask him? Apparently a 37" inseam is more like that of a 6’10" man; long inseams typically top out at 36, hence the additional confusion. What pants does he like from King Sized – my guy doesn’t particularly like jeans and elastic waistbands are a definitely no no.
34". he’s mostly torso. We get casual from King Sized, sweats, etc. Sorry, I never have purchased dress pants for him in 8 years!
I come from a family of tall guys who are also (mostly) big too. Finding clothing for them is a piece of cake compared to finding it for the Fella’s teenaged son who is a 6’7" beanpole. His inseam is considerably larger than his waist size (27X36). Shirts tend to be pup tents if they are long enough in the waist and sleeves.
We’ve actually bought him pants in a slightly larger waist size and had him belt the hell out of them. Fortunately, given his age and our climate, cargo shorts are an option most of the year. He actually likes his dad’s shirts, even though Dad is much shorter. Because they are bigger, they are therefore longer.
Another bump!
Any recommendations for tall Lounge or PJ style pants, at least a 36" inseam (preferably more)? Not sweat pants…those seem to be easier to find and are too hot for him.
((He’s lost and maintained 40 pound weight loss for awhile now. His true sizing is 37x37, but most pants fit him in 36x38 with a touch of hemming.))
I would love to have a nice pair of pajama pants…if you find some, order two and send me one!
I did find what I think is the next best thing, though. Lightweight cotton pants off the rack at Dick’s sporting goods. I think they’d qualify as ‘lounge pants’ since they are about the same weight as PJs. I believe they are ‘Champion’ brand.
They weren’t labeled as tall or anything, I was just walking by and noticed how long they were.
Since the thread has been bumped, I’ll recommend the Skoda Yeti for tall people. There’s an Audi version too.
Order TWO!? I’ll order SEVEN and I’ll send you two
Huh, interesting. Will definitely make a run there this week. I’ll try just about anything at this point!
Ah, I see that you have learned the rules for shopping for a tall man:
- Never pass up a quality piece of clothing that fits
- When you find said clothing, but as many as you can afford
nods solemnly I realized I was in very new territory when I ebay “watched” a pair of well used Levi loose Silvertabs in 36x38 (that are longer made) go for a truly eye-popping sum.
Tall Guy Fun Fact: Old Navy button down shirts in XXL Slim and XL Tall are the same exact fit in body with, shoulder with, sleeve length and width, collar size - just one inch shorter in overall length. If you’re well proportioned or mostly legs, this won’t matter and sometimes XXL Slim are in stores.
Old Navy polo shirts, same deal, but with 1/2 inch difference in length.
Um…not to get your hopes up buuuut. I think I have a pair of those in 36x38 or 38x38. They were too big when I got them and they’re way too big now, so they’re barely worn and they’ve been sitting in the garage sale pile.
Lemme check when I get home.
I believe Edward Bauer (his friends call him Eddie) sells pj pants in “long” on their website. Lessee… Nope. I mean, they do sell them, but in something called “Tall,” which apparently yields a 32.5" inseam. I know loungey pants are different, but I don’t really consider that “tall.” El SpouseO (6’6") does have a pair of Eddie Bauer pj pants (the flannel kind) that do seem long enough, but they’re a couple of years old - I didn’t buy these and haven’t bought him any comfy pants in a while, and maybe they were longer then. I’d be hesitant to buy new ones from EB just based on the stated length, though.
All that said, a couple reviews on the Eddie Bauer site referred to recipients of their flannel pj’s being 6’6" and delighted with the length, so I dunno. You pays your money, you takes your chances, I guess.
My granddad was 6’7" and my dad was 6’6". My brother is only 6’4" (we call him “Shorty.”) None of them had/has any problem finding well-tailored clothing in stores. They were/are well-turned-out dudes.
One of my girlfriends is married to guy who’s 6’8". He dresses well off the rack without difficulty.
You know who has trouble finding good clothes? My girlfriend’s husband who is only 5’5". He is in his 50’s and he doesn’t want to choose his clothing from the Middle School rack at department stores. He does most of his shopping when he happens to visit US cities with a large Amer-Asian population, although he’s not of Asian descent himself.
I’m average height but I have a friend who I bicycle with who is 7’0"" tall. Try to find bike clothes for a guy that size. It’s easier to get bicycles because frame builders are set up to do custom sizing.
My friend is a successful businessman so money is not a concern. Still, his biking clothes often look worn and tattered because it is so hard to find clothes that fit.
It seems like the vast majority of tall men get their additional height in the torso and not their legs. Other than Sick Ate and Giraffe, tall dopers seem well below a 36" inseam. Even my tailor expressed shock at me bringing in his unhemmed 38 or 38.5" inseam pants. He tailors pants for the university athletic teams, including football and basketball.
!!! I haz paypal ready and waiting While other Levi’s he owns are 36 waist, his Silvertabs are 38 waist. OH BOY OH BOY.
How strange they all must look…overweight, with their short little legs and stubby arms. Otherwise, I can’t imagine how they all have such success just walking in to a store and buying clothes.
PayPal my ass…it’s just passing along tall people karma. Only had time for a cursory search last night, I’ll find them tonight when I can dig deeper.
