Question on Ethics: Marketing & Friendship

Here is the scenario: two people are good friends whom share the same occupation. Friend “A” assisted Friend “B” for a project that was affiliated with Client “X”. That has been 3 years and Friend “A” had no contact w/ Client “X” (while assisting Friend “B”. Friend “A” is now in business for himself. Friend “A” was a trade show and met Client “X”. Client “X” showed interest in Friend “A’s” services.

All that said, is it unethical for Friend “A” to do business w/ Client “X”?

Welcome to the SDMB, A-T.

The CCC forum is for comments on Cecil’s columns. I’ll move this thread to, IMHO, our forum for polling, surveying, advice, etc.

I was in the trucking business and non-compete clauses were fairly common. If I got a load through a broker (some of who were also trucking cos.) They would sometimes have a non-compete clause in the contract. These were normally a year, but sometimes they would say 2-3 years. I would honor a year, but ignore anything beyond.
As far as between friends, I can think of one ocassion where that happened. I just called the guy up and asked him if he had a problem w/ it and he said no. In that case we had no contract, but I called him as a courtesy.

I’m having trouble following your SAT question, but what you are referring to is “networking”. As most business involves some measure of trust and relationships, it is perfectly ethical for A and X to do business together. Provided of course there is no exchange of proprietary or confidential information or intellectual property.
