Holiday cleaning is in progress at Chez FaerieBeth, not to mention preparing our home to be put on the market, and it is time to thin the book and movie collection.
Husband and I were thinking of donating all the used books and VHS tapes to our small (underfunded) city library, but I began to wonder about the libraries that may have been affected by the recent disasters in the Gulf (or even other places who would be in need of materials). Does anyone know of a place or how to find out where I might send these items? They’re not in mint condition, but all the books are serviceable and the VHS tapes are in great condition.
Interestingly enough, our local library had a donation box for Gulf Coast libraries. Dunno if they don’t listen to the ALA or what, but your library might not either. Another place to donate might be a nursing home.
The United Methodist Church has a mission in the Appalachian mountain area that maintains a library of donated books. They don’t take textbooks, but otherwise seemed pretty flexible in what they’d accept.
I stayed there for a week working on a Habitat for Humanity project a couple years ago. They do serve a very needy, isolated population including many elderly and disabled folks.
