Questions About Supplements and Vitamins

Sure, I could spend the rest of the night Googling all these questions one at a time and separating the real info from the sellers and quacks, but what fun would *that *be?

So I’m just starting an exercise/weight loss regimen. I’ve also gone from taking one thing a day (Effexor) to about 10 things, including vitamins and supplements. There are three supplements in particular that I question. The recommendations for them came from a woman I know that works at Vitamin Warehouse and is a self-proclaimed expert on herbs and vitamins and supplements. A lot of her advice is truly bullshit. She will argue with someone that works for dermatologists (me) that lentigos (brown spots caused by the sun) are really “liver spots” and indicate that your liver needs cleansed of toxins. She is not particularly trustworthy in her medical knowledge, obviously.

1)Natural 21 Grain Lecithin (1.36g)- supposedly supports a healthy cardiovascular system. The bottle says take one daily, but she told me to take it 3 times a day.

2)Irwin Naturals Less-Stress Weight Control Soft Gels- contains a lot of vitamins plus “Bioperine complex” and green tea extract.

3)Chromium Picolinate- my doctor actually suggested this a couple years ago to control my blood sugar and help lose weight. I took one and my blood sugar dropped shortly after. I’m not sure if those two happenings were related, but I am always just over the borderline on the fasting glucose tests, I have hypoglycemia, and I had gestational diabetes. I don’t want to take it if it does lower your blood sugar a lot immediately- the whole sweating, shaking, and going pale thing doesn’t work for me.

Also, a lot of the supplements contain vitamins, and I take a multivitamin. Is that too many vitamins?

You don’t say what vitamins you’re taking or in what quantities. Some can be taken in larger doses, some should not be. Also your list of ‘things’ you’re taking is a bit scattered… effexor is obviously not a vitamin, so if there’s other serious medication in that list you may want to consult your doctor.
