Questions about the "Chicago out of control" FQ

Chronos has been keeping a pretty tight rein on this thread, saying “stats and data” are on topic, but not personal anecdotes, and hid several posts deemed inappropriate.

I have no strong feelings about the modding in this thread, but wondered if the modding is crystal clear to everyone but me. I think the OP is pretty problematic for FQ, and more suited for GD or IMHO. But for some reason it wasn’t moved. Given the lack of clarity as to what “out of control” means, and how one would measure the impact of being a sanctuary city, it did not surprise me at all that responses veered from strict data.

Don’t mean this post to criticize the modding. Just found it curious. Having been born in Chicago and lived near the city all my life, I was interested in the thread. But I did not care to conduct on-line research in order to do so - or to validate my considerable personal experience. IMO, anecdotes and specific experiences from folk who currently spend time in the city is a different type of data, but it impresses me as being as meaningful as someone across the country/globe posting based on their google fu.

What I see is obvious, as long as it is in FQ, kudos to @Chronos for keeping the thread Factual. I can see an argument for it being moved to In My Humble Opinion or Politics & Elections even, but I think the better option would be to start a related thread off the Factual Questions one for either Debate, Politics or Opinions and personal anecdotes. The only reason I rule out GD, is the OP isn’t really built for GD, which makes sense as that was not the intent.

Too many FQ threads get non-factual replies before they’re answered. This one seems to have factual answers that can be found and posted.

How to Reply as a linked Topic:

Click Reply, in the upper left corner of the reply window is the reply type button, looks like a curving arrow point to the right.

Choose Reply as linked topic and it starts a new thread. As an example, you can choose GD, IMHO or The Pit for it.

That is actually the best method.

Nevermind, wrong forum.

Removed reply and flag cleared.

I prefer to not move threads like that, because if someone wants a factual discussion, they should be able to get it. If people run out of factual things to say, the thread will naturally come to an end. If people want to have a non-factual discussion, then it’s better for another, parallel thread to be started in the appropriate forum.

But if I travel through Chicago, and express my perceptions, as well as as my understanding of the local news as read daily, are those not facts?

Also, there seem to remain a number of non-factual posts that are unhidden.

No, as evidenced by the fact that different people have different perceptions.

I hid what I thought were the worst of them. Some of them, it seemed better to keep, because they were at least close to factual, or because I thought that removing them might harm the flow of the thread.

Cool. You are the mod, not I.

I’ll cite a thread I created in ATMB a couple months ago on an IMO closely allied topic.

The OP and others here might benefit from that discussion.
