As it turns out, I have two completely unrelated questions:
-
In many animals (according to things like the Discovery Channel and the Straight Dope) the sense of smell is used for various identification purposes, to see when females are ready to mate, to define a territorial boundary, etc. Yet there are references from as far back as ancient Egypt and before of perfumes,etc to cover up our own body odor. My question is, when and why did human body odors become offensive to one another?
-
Obviously the good ole-fashioned genitalia-to-genitalia type of sex was instinctual and necessary, but how/when/why did other forms of sexual intercourse come about? I seem to recall reading somewhere that other primates engage in other forms of sex also, so is it not specifically a human behaviour? I imagine some one has researched this somewhere (people being the nasty critters they are
)
Thanks!
