Romanian fascist dictator Ion Antonescu was executed by firing squad in 1946 by the Communist government, but how did it happen? I’ve only read one account, and it’s pretty unusual. Allegedly, his executioners were selected from Communist shock troops, for authorities thought that most Romanians would oppose executing him. Furthermore, the first volley of gunfire allegedly failed in ending his life, with him being quoted as stating, “You can’t even shoot straight!” After this, he survived a second volley, whereon an officer had to shoot him point blank with a pistol. Is there any fact behind any of this?
Finally, is Antonescu regaining popularity, or perhaps basic respect, in modern Romania? I read that since the fall of the Communist dictatorship in '89 that his status is being gradually revived, despite protests from the Jewish community. Is there any truth in this? Thanks.
