Quick poll: Have you ever been stung?

I stepped on a bee in the driveway and it stung me. Hurt like a sumbitch for about five minutes. It was just a couple of years ago and that was the first time it had ever happened. And the only time, thank goodness.

I’ve never been stung.

I don’t know if they can get used to people, but in my experience, they (or at least some species) can be very non-agressive. As a teen, I was in some summer camp, and we would eat at a large outdoor table. There probably was a wasp nest nearby, because there were a lot of wasps eating with us during each meal. The first time, we were quite impressed, but in quick order became accustomed to them. We would just wawe so that they would fly away from our food, not drop in our chocolate milk, etc… In two weeks, nobody was stung, despite us dealing very casually with the critters.

1) Have you ever been stung (by any flying insect)? Yes, the first, second, and third time was when I was in a mountain bike race at age 23.

2) If so, what do you remember about your first experience being stung? How serious an effect did it have on you, both physically and psychologically? I remember having a sudden pain in my ankle where the bee had stung me through my sock. The subsequent bee stings during the same race occured in the other ankle. I had no lasting damage apart from the lingering itch/pain for the rest of the day.

3) How many times have you been stung overall? Three, all within 5 minutes during said race.

1) Have you ever been stung (by any flying insect)?
Yes.

2) If so, what do you remember about your first experience being stung? How serious an effect did it have on you, both physically and psychologically?
It was my own fault. I was hungover and knelt on a wasp that I hadn’t seen. I think it lessened my phobia of bees and wasps, but I still hate them. Physically I was fine, it just swelled up for a few hours where I had been stung.

3) How many times have you been stung overall?
Just the once.

1) Have you ever been stung (by any flying insect)?
Yes

2) If so, what do you remember about your first experience being stung? How serious an effect did it have on you, both physically and psychologically?
I was in a pool, saving the tiny bumblebee from certain death amidst the chlorinated splashings of the other kids, when the little bastard stung me. I was quite hurt that he didn’t know I was trying to help him.
Physically it was just a little welt. Gone in a day or two.

3) How many times have you been stung overall?
Just that once.

  1. Have you ever been stung (by any flying insect)? Yes, wasps - I was 4 and didn’t know there was a nest under my aunt’s porch

  2. If so, what do you remember about your first experience being stung? How serious an effect did it have on you, both physically and psychologically? Well, I’m 25 now, so I’ve gotten over it, but I do still remember it. I mean, the whole nest came after me so it did make an impression! Still, my most vivid memory is not of actually getting stung, or any pain (my mom said she was surprised I cried so little, but I have been stung since and wasp stings HURT!). Since I wasn’t allergic, the doctor told my mom to put a baking soda paste on the stings (around 20-22 of them, all areas of my body). I didn’t know what the past was, so I remember lying naked on the couch, wondering why on earth my mother was putting Cream of Wheat all over me.

  3. How many times have you been stung overall?
Grand total, probably about 25, if you count all the stings from that incident. I’ve only been stung maybe two or three times since then.

42 years and counting and not one sting yet. This, and I garden, barefoot most of the time and fish occasionally. Heck, I had a bee or something stuck in my hair yesterday.

I was out back checking the tomatoes, (barefoot again), and I hear this bzzzzzzzzz, bazzzzzzzzzzz, way WAY too close to my head. I scream like a little girl, alarming the neighbors on both sides, and run flailing up to the house. Boyfriend knocks offending critter to deck and applies a generous helping of workboot. It was large, yellow, black and pasty. Couldn’t distinguish much else…

I can’t remember how many times I’ve been stung. The worst was when a swarm attacked me. Luckily I was on my bike and was able to outrun them but I was stung at least 30 times all over my upper body. They had even gotten under my cap and entangled in my hair.

I also was stung by a hornet and that was probably the worst. My forearm swelled up like Popeye’s and the sting actually left a small scar.

While not flying insects, I’ve also been stung 4 times by scorpions. On one occasion I was administered an antidote.

the worst thing I have ever been stung by was a damned little bitch of a mosquito carrying the Anopheles germ. (I forget if they’re spirochetes or what). But I suppose that doesn’t count.

No bees, wasps, yellowjackets, hornets, or otherwise. And I spent a LOT of time outdoors and barefoot. Just exceptionally lucky.

  1. Have you ever been stung (by any flying insect)?
    Yes.

  2. If so, what do you remember about your first experience being stung? How serious an effect did it have on you, both physically and psychologically?
I stepped on a bee. One wasp sting I got while mowing the lawn near our chicken house when I was a teenager. The other I got when I slipped into a pair of shorts that had been hanging on the clothesline. I don’t know how he got in there. I can’t really say any of these experiences affected me much. Just your basic owie.

  3. How many times have you been stung overall?
    Three that I can remember.

I will note that my husband is deathly afraid of wasps. Last summer when we painted our house he had a really bad experience. He was sitting on the overhang over our back door when a gang of wasps decided to attack him. I had gone inside for a moment but when I came back outside he was flipping out. Bad. He was waving his arms all over and swinging his paint brush (hitting himself in the face and other places in the process) and I was afraid he was going to fall. I had to coax him down and hold the ladder. Once I knew he was okay, I admit to pointing and laughing at how he’d painted all over himself. I’m evil.

I’ve been stung by bees, wasps, hornets, yellow jackets, jellyfish, fire ants, and some little horror that I cornered in my parents’ swimming pool. The latter was by far the most painful, but I had to work real hard to catch the thing to make it happen.

From an earlier thread:

When I was about six years old, my Grandfather had me going into his window wells in his house in So. Illinois to clean them out. I got a Matchbox car, or something. Anyway, I jumped down into one, directly into a large Yellow Jacket nest, and was stung several dozen times. I jumped out of there, rolled around on the ground, and they still were coming after me and stinging me. I can still remember looking down at my knee as one of them came into focus and stung me. It looked about two feet long. I have a sneaking suspicion that led to my now mortal fear of stinging insects. (Oh yes - and I was told that every one that stung me died, only to discover years later that was bullshit. Grrr!!!)
