Towards the end, Simon loses his job because why? I didn’t catch what happened. I gather they probably figured out he had done something to frame the other guy, but did the film explain how that happened?
TERRIBLE MOVIE BY THE WAY. Never forget that it’s okay when women are harmed so long as the harm makes a guy feel some way.
I wouldn’t say they ‘figured out’ anything so much as the guy who was framed went on an insane tirade with everyone watching screaming about how Simon framed him for the (whatever it was).
Wow, Wikipedia has an incredibly detailed plot description. Why do some movies attract fans who write out such detailed descriptions?
Anyway, per that summary:
Robyn searches Simon’s home office while he’s away on a golfing trip and discovers that he has run background checks on both Gordo and Danny McDonald.
[Danny] curses at Simon claiming to have seen an email that Simon sent, fabricating all of the information that disqualified him for the promotion and led to him getting fired. …Simon gets a phone call from work, informing him that they know he lied to get the job over Danny and that he is fired because of it.
What a mess of a movie! So, did Simon fabricate things, or just find things in the background check?
It was made clear, I think, that Simon fabricated things. I just was surprised if it was supposed to be Danny’s tirade that tipped people off–surely he had told this to others before in a calmer context, and also, surely no one would be likely to take seriously anything he said during the crazy Danny incident.
ETA: But maybe the idea was supposed to be he immediately went to the bosses afterwards with a case file. Was a quick turnaround though even in that case.
Also why did Simon insist in the end on letting Danny go? Best I can figure is to look like a nice guy to his wife maybe? AND THEN–after letting him go, wouldn’t the police still have gone after Danny? The victim of vandalism isn’t required to “press charges” or something in order for an arrest to occur, AFAIK.
Edited once more to add: Though if Danny had seen an email Simon sent to someone, it seems likely someone was helping Danny out. Oh shit what if it was you know who? I thought the loss of the job was just this separate event but maybe not…
I was guessing that when Danny was let go, that his boss or whoever showed him the email proof of why he couldn’t work there any more. Danny of course protested and said that it was all made up, but wasn’t believed at the time.
So when Danny came to Simon’s house, Simon didn’t press charges because he was afraid that other people would hear Danny’s story and maybe start to believe him. Of course that backfired and people still listened to Danny’s story anyway and so Simon was fired. Simon is smart, but not an evil genius who thinks several steps ahead.
It was smart to have it not be totally specific. If they had showed specifically what Simon had fabricated, then we would wonder how believable a fabrication it was, and why it was more convincing than them knowing Danny who had been at the company for a while. They showed us just the necessary information, that Simon is somewhat of a bully that doesn’t mind using people if necessary.
