Quote sniping is fucking annoying to read and respond to.

Don’t get me wrong, Shot From Guns is a moron with a highly-annoying posting style, but it ain’t quote sniping. Quote sniping is jumping on someone’s balls for a single sentence out of a larger post. Buddy does more of a reply-to-six-posts-in-one thing, which is different. The crux of the difference is that the latter doesn’t lead to fights over bullshit or drive-by posting.

Aww, that post would have been a lot more awesome if your insult had included links to evidence. As such it just looks sort of sad.

Great. No one cares.

By the way rachellelogram, welcome to the SDMB. I hope you like it here, and I’m sure that the board culture will grow on you, as long as you give it a chance to.

Why is this practice a problem?

I’m sure you don’t care, but while I did not quite LOL, I did audibly snerk.

As to the OP, I would prefer to not have traffic on my way to work. So far the universe has not listened.

Stay damp, avoid sunlight.

Done and done.

I rather look forward to this thread tomorrow.

This is much too civil a discussion for this forum.

And did the OP really call out “Pit” as if it were a collective entity? That’s funny.

I’m w/ **elucidator **on this one. Snipe hunting means one thing and one thing only. I don’t get the allusion to something else. Maybe I’m just old…

Prefacing something is generally highly effective.
I came here recently…
How recently?
…from another intelligent forum in which quote-sniping is heavily discouraged.
Really?
It’s not a bannable offense unless it’s done repeatedly and obtusely (afaik nobody has actually been perma-banned over it,…
You don’t say.
…either they stop doing it, or leave pissed off that the community united against them).
Uh huh.
Mods will generally just place a spoiler around the sniper’s post and warn against doing it again.
I like what you’ve done here.
In your opinion, Pit: does quote-sniping have any merit at all?
If I answer no to this question, I sure look like an ass; well, more-so.
I’m willing to reconsider my stance on it, though I will always find the practice aesthetically displeasing.
Perhaps if I added flowers, a sweet smelling fragrance, or a succulent pork rib.
My opinion is that you should say what you want to say instead of quoting ten different separate people or ideas and responding to each in a nitpicky fashion. Or quote a larger block of text once instead of chopping it into 10 separate quote blocks. There is always a better way of discoursing than to quote-snipe.
Some might disagree.
I am specifically referring to posts like these made by Shot From Guns (the last of which is the most egregious example length-wise, though arguably the least offensive regarding content).
The guy (girl?) is clearly an ass.
I realize my work monitor is tiny and shitty,…
You need to convince your boss to upgrade their eMachines and Windows ME.
…but I really wish…
Wishing can be nice sometimes.
I didn’t have to page down 8 fucking times…
Yeah, 6 really should be the maximum.
…to bypass your verbal diarrhea.
Your imagery here is fantastic.
And yes, I realize there is a foe function on the boards.
Do you also realize their is a friend function on the boards?
But I see others quote-sniping here,…
Utterly, utterly reprehensible.
…and I’d prefer not to.
Comme tu vu.
(I also would prefer not to foe anyone over their style, that seems childish)
Everybody was kung foe fighting.

You should pit something worthwhile, like local commercials turning up the volume on your television.

C’mon! Someone had to do it. I just took one for the team.

I was going to do it, but you beat me to it.
So I figured I’d do the only other thing that you knew someone would probably do eventually in this topic.

I know one place where a quote parser is considered a troll. They actually decided to not have a quote button so that it would be less likely to occur.

The OP will be assimilated to the hive-mind that is the Pit. :stuck_out_tongue:

Either that, or the OP thinks that Brad posts here a lot, but isn’t on a first name basis with him.

You’ll note that I’m cleverly avoiding sniping my own posts.

Of course, it has the side-effect of inflating my post count, but omelettes and eggs, after all.

rachelellogram, how does this other board respond to a “drive by”?

Hooo, boy. NM

Quote sniping is when you set a bot to monitor a thread to post at the last possible second–right before the mod closes it.

The Brad Pit, eh?

Sniping is a term coined over at the xkcd forums. I wasn’t aware it went by different terms elsewhere (seems like parsing and sniping are the same thing), but that board is extremely insular and really the only one I frequent other than this. See here for the rules list to which I’m referring:

Lastly, no, I didn’t mean “snipping.” However, I don’t know the origin of the term “quote-sniping.” Conceivably it could have been coined as a typo. That’s just what they call it over there.

Okay, I’ll respond to your pitting.

But first you need to hold the end of this diode.
