R.I.P. David Lynch

Another one of our era’s most creative minds has gone away. Sigh.
I liked The Elephant Man. I just loved Wild At Heart from the first few minutes, and I must have watched it a dozen times. Didn’t think much of Eraserhead on first viewing, watched it again and realized it’s actually darkly hilarious, especially the dinner scene. I like it better now. And I absolutely hated Blue Velvet the first time I saw that. On reflection, I got to where I sort of like it, mainly for the throbbing absurd weirdness of it, but it still ain’t my favorite movie.

RIP David Lynch. You done good, sir.

Well, damn

I loved both Eraserhead and The Straight Story. And they are both so completely different from each other.

Did not care for Blue Velvet, although “Heineken?! Fuck that shit! Pabst Blue Ribbon!” is an iconic line, right up there with “Frankly my dear, I don’t give a damn.”

My husband bought a videotape of Eraserhead because we had heard so much about it, so we had a family movie night (with our teenage daughter). We all watched it and when it was over - silence. ‘Well, that was special…’ I said, LOL…watched both Twin Peaks series. I thought the second one was incredibly messed up and creepy, and I hate to admit it, but I was scared at night. (by that time, husband had passed away, I was home alone at night).

did anyone ever read Lynch’s cartoon “the angriest dog in the world” in late LA Reader in 80’s

Yes, I remember that cartoon! But I didn’t realize that was by David Lynch.

Apparently, Richard Farnsworth saw Blue Velvet only after he’d shot The Straight Story (or possibly during…I can’t find the cite) and was horrified/offended beyond belief. And yeah, I’m trying to think of another director whose works range that far between family-friendly and NSFW poles and coming up empty.

I went though his filmography and I have seen most.

My favorite, The Straight Story, A Disney flick about an old man without a drivers license who drives his lawn tractor across Iowa to see his estranged ailing brother. A fantastic film from beginning to end.

Loved his Dune as well.

Reader also carried cartoon "Binky the one-eared rabbit’ by Matt Groening of Simpsons fame

When I was in college my friend and I watched Eraserhead. We thought it would be a good idea to get stoned and watch it again.

It was a bad idea. To this day that movie freaks me out. Despite that, I love that Lynch made it.

I wish there were more directors like him.

George Romero started out directing short films for Mister Rogers’ Neighborhood.

Pencils down, I think we have a winner already. Good call.

I could say Wes Craven, ranging from Last House on the Left to Music of the Heart but I still think you nailed it.

Same here! The L.A. Reader was where I discovered The Straight Dope, Matt Groening’s cartoons, and other comics.

I went on and on at my college job about Blue Velvet, and as a result a co-worker watched it with his girlfriend and her parents. He did NOT find that as funny as I did.

Man, I am more bummed by this one than I thought I would be. I’m another who loved Dune. I liked Straight Story a lot, but was a little confused when it never went off the rails. And yeah, Episode 8 of Twin Peaks: The Return was astounding.

The marquee at the Texas Theater today:

Honorable mention goes to Rob Zombie for his work as a production assistant on Pee Wee’s Playhouse.

Speaking of children’s television, I wonder what Lynch thought about this:

The great Disney cartoon Darkwing Duck also did a Twin Peaks themed episode called Twin Beaks.

If we’re going to tributes, there’s always Blue Peanuts. Same creator as Apocalypse Pooh.

As did I.

Wasn’t it the same picture every time with different captions?
