I’ve never seen anyone so enthusiastic about the weather. And his thick-rimmed glasses and bow tie were perfect for his ‘professor’ persona. Like Jerry Dunphy with his ‘From the desert to the sea, to all of Southern California, a good evening’, ‘Dr. George’ was unforgettable.
I just read about it on a Facebook post about 15 minutes ago. The first thought that popped into my head was “Johnny L.A.’s going to start an SDMB thread on this.”
He was the bestest weatherman that ever existed. Didn’t he get his start on one of the independent L.A. stations, though? Wasn’t he on channel 5?
Yeah, he was great. He made being a nerd–specifically a weather nerd–more than respectable. He was one of a kind. The Vin Scully of LA weather reporters.
Before Channel 7, he was on KOB Channel 4 in Albuquerque in the 1960s. A true institution there, too. Best of all, he was a science teacher - 9th grade science, specifically. The best of all school days ever, was when we got to school, the whole buzz was - FISHBECK’S SUBSTITUTE TEACHING TODAY:cool:
