R.I.P., Dr. George

‘Dr. George’ Fishbeck, the best TV weather presenter ever, has died at the age of 92.

I’ve never seen anyone so enthusiastic about the weather. And his thick-rimmed glasses and bow tie were perfect for his ‘professor’ persona. Like Jerry Dunphy with his ‘From the desert to the sea, to all of Southern California, a good evening’, ‘Dr. George’ was unforgettable.

Oh, man. George was an institution.

I just read about it on a Facebook post about 15 minutes ago. The first thought that popped into my head was “Johnny L.A.’s going to start an SDMB thread on this.”

He was the bestest weatherman that ever existed. Didn’t he get his start on one of the independent L.A. stations, though? Wasn’t he on channel 5?

I did.

He was on 7.

Yeah, he was great. He made being a nerd–specifically a weather nerd–more than respectable. He was one of a kind. The Vin Scully of LA weather reporters.

I remember watching him and Dunphy all those years I was in CA in the military. There was also Christine Lund, who co-anchored with Dunphy.

Before Channel 7, he was on KOB Channel 4 in Albuquerque in the 1960s. A true institution there, too. Best of all, he was a science teacher - 9th grade science, specifically. The best of all school days ever, was when we got to school, the whole buzz was - FISHBECK’S SUBSTITUTE TEACHING TODAY:cool::cool::cool:

So much fun! Great guy! RIP buddy.

We got the bubble-headed-bleach-blond who Comes on at five She can tell you 'bout the plane crash with a gleam In her eye It's interesting when people die Give us dirty laundry

He retired from 7 in 1990, but then went over to 2 from '94 through '97.
