R.I.P. George Nicholaw

For many years the vice president and general manager at KNX News Radio, a CBS News affiliate in Los Angeles, George Nicholaw founded the radio station and managed it well.

Every day, for many years – 70’s, 80’s, 90’s, and early ought’s – he would read a news editorial. He spoke slowly and carefully, as he was battling a slight speech impediment. His opinions were universally thoughtful and moderate.

In all the years I listened to him, I disagreed several times…but was never, not so much as once, offended. There was absolutely no malice in the man’s political stance.

(The station once allowed me to record a rebuttal to one of his editorials, and this was broadcast.)

He was a radio pioneer, and a gentleman, through and through. I still listen to “his” radio station for news.

Being as I’m not from your area I never heard of the gentleman, but anybody that can inspire such a thoughtful post as the OP’s must have been a greay guy.

I’m sorry for your loss, and for his family.

Likewise, I haven’t heard of him, but he sounds like a gem. We are woefully short, it seems, on people with whom we can respectfully disagree.

He really was moderate. He wasn’t “left” enough for me, but he also wasn’t “right” enough for others. He was able to synthesize the best of both liberal and conservative thought.

His philosophy was the sort that everyone could look at and say, “Well, I may not agree, but I’m not threatened by it.” I wish more politicians could find their way to that heartland.
