Former VP candidate, congressmen, and quarterback Jack Kemp has died.
r.i.p.
Jack, I so wanted you to be President in 1988. God bless you.
I didn’t know he was my dad’s age. He seemed younger than that. Must have been the great hair. Didn’t agree with his economics - I still think that Supply Side is Voodoo - but he seemed like a decent guy, and AFAIK he never got into the politics of anger and fear that plagues his grand old party these days.
I agree with ShibbOleth, Kemp always struck me as a sincere person even if I was diametrically opposed to his positions. Of lesser consequence, he was a great quarterback in his day. I think he will be missed and remembered as a man of integrity.
Jack Kemp was my state rep growing up and the only Republican my folks ever voted for (for rep, not VP). He was well respected in our home.
His undying support of trickle down economics well after it was proven hogwash was misbegotten and foolish, but that’s about the worst you can say about him. He never came off as vicious or divisive. He was a throwback to how partisan politics used to be before the talk radio era.
I too wanted him to be President back then. I’ve changed parties since then, but still I’ll miss him.
Yeah, Kemp was the model for what Republicans *should be. Whether you agree with his politics or not, he was serious, he had a good grasp of economics, he could justify his positions, and he was never mean, paranoid, or a tool of special interests wrapped in Republican clothing like so many of them now are. He’ll be missed.
Kemp wasn’t a bad guy. I didn’t always agree with him, but he wasn’t like most of the Republicans I despise. Bill Clinton didn’t mind the Dole/Kemp ticket that he beat in 1996.
Northern Piper: Sez on the Dope that Jack Kemp died.
Mrs Piper: Who?
Northern Piper: Jack Kemp. Ran for the nomination for President in 1988.
Mrs Piper: Don’t remember him.
Northern Piper: Ran as Vice-Presidential candidate for the Republicans in 1996.
Mrs Piper: Still don’t remember him.
Northern Piper: Father of Jimmy Kemp, who started as quarterback for the Saskatchewan Roughriders in a few games in 1996.
Mrs Piper: Oh, I remember him - he seemed like a nice fellow. Wasn’t there a rumour he was going to come up to watch Jimmy in one of his games?
It’s all a matter of perspective.
