For a trans-Pacific flight a couple of years ago, I loaded up an iPad with a bunch of episodes of Monty Python’s Flying Circus. Then when I was on the plane, I declined to watch the because I realized that Terry Gilliam’s animated segments would feature nudity and I didn’t want to cause a stir with other passengers. I think this is good etiquette, just as it’s good etiquette to use headphones if you’re going to listen to audio on a plane.
Your wife is right. Just skip the scenes with nudity and you would be fine.
I brought “Dark City” on to watch on a plane recently thinking that it was fine. I had forgotten that there is some nudity. I fast forwarded through those scenes. To sit there watching it on a plane would have been rude.
Thanks. The suggestion for a privacy filter is a good one. I’ve never used one, and again, maybe I was being naive, but I didn’t think of nudity when I decided to watch this particular movie on the plane. I hadn’t seen it, and hadn’t thought of this issue sufficiently to censor. It never occurred to me to even consider that this was an issue, which is why I’m coming here to ask about the social norms. I sort of disagree with them, being that movies like the Avengers, with wall to wall violence, are available to watch on the in flight entertainment by any of the passengers. But, it’s not my place to change society’s view of sex and violence!
So, I wasn’t prepared this time, but will be next time.
I would like to point out the the built-in entertainment system on aircraft these days shows R-rated movies. The only thing out-of-bounds now is straight up porn.
You also said it had way more nudity and sex than you thought. If you want to be a pedant and pout and stamp your feet while saying it wasn’t “graphic sex” then bully for you. You win? I guess.
There is a sizable middle ground between “more nudity and sex than I thought” and “graphic sex”. I didn’t come here asking about social norms about pornography on a plane, as that question has a pretty obvious answer. I wanted to avoid histrionics regarding graphic sex by indicating exactly which movie I was watching so it was concrete rather than ephemeral, which might cause the thread to go off the rails with people discussing imaginary graphic sex scenarios.
Just to be clear, Wolf of Wall Street wins at “graphic” and “distasteful.” It’s not like the boob scene in Big.
I’ve seen WOWS. Your wife was right. Not on a commercial air liner. Watch at home.
Mile High Club time.
There’s a boob scene in Big?
Are there airlines that show one movie to the whole plane? I’ve never experienced that, it’s either no entertainment at all or personal entertainment systems.
If you’re in public then viewing R-rated movies is not very classy. Movie theaters restrict kids under 17 from viewing R-rated movies, a plane should be no different because it’s mixed public company.
Sort of. There’s a scene in which Tom Hanks is briefly fascinated by (and gently caresses) Elizabeth Perkin’s bra-clad breast. No nudity, but it was kind of erotically charged, probably not appropriate for pre-pubescent kids.
There were. Most recently was on a flight to Japan in 2010. There were no seatback entertainment systems, so they were projecting movies onto bulkhead screens, and you plugged your headset into the armrest to pick up the audio.
Wow. If THAT is inappropriate to watch on a plane, then I acknowledge that my gauges are WAY off.
No, no, that IS appropriate to watch on a plane. It’s just one quick scene.
WOWS, which has full frontal, maybe not so much.
Haven’t seen the film, but I think it shouldn’t be that big a deal.
I can’t be the only one who’s thought of the onboard film in Airplane!
Reminds me of a joke:
Cops knock at door, old woman answers.
“Ma’am, you phoned to complain of indecent behavior?”
“Yes, it’s that young couple in the next building. They walk around naked all day, and God only knows what other things they do!”
(Cop looks out window). “Ma’am, I don’t see anything.”
“No, you have to stand on this chair…”
Make your own decision, I guess. If you’d be OK with your 7YO kid watching it, then feel free to watch it on the plane, with the understanding that the kid behind you or next to you might be watching over your shoulder.
Enough is enough! I have had it with this motherfuckin’ nudity…
Aw, never mind.
If there is a kid *next *to you, then yeah you probably shouldn’t watch it. But if there is a kid sitting *behind *you who is watching over your shoulder, then fuck that. He should sit down in his seat. I have never been able to see what people are doing in the seats in front of me. Unless you are standing up looking down at them, I don’t even see how that is possible.
The ones I’ve seen have been edited to remove the nudity - at least on US airlines.
