Hijack: For a different take on tribute bands, check out Tributosaurus, a Chicago-based tribute band. Five core musicians, no special costumes, and they hire on more musicians to recreate the music as needed, to reproduce the sound on the albums as recorded, as closely as possible.
For what band? Depends on when you’re watching them, as they change their tribute every month!
That’s actually close to something I was tossing around in my head a while back: an album tribute band. Start with a core of musicians, then bring in others as necessary. Pick a classic album, and perform that album in its entirety.
Just remembered a band I saw in Santa Cruz, The White Album Ensemble. They don’t go for the look, rather they play the albums in their entirety. I saw the “RubberRevolver” show, and it was excellent.
I saw them way back in the 80’s at the Palomino Club. They were really good to my untrained high school ear. Got to meet and talk to them after the show. Really nice guys as I remember.
Todd Rundgren was involved in two Beatles tributes:
A Walk Down Abbey Road, with Anne Wilson of Heart, John Entwhistle of the Who, David Pack of Ambrosia and Alan Parsons.
It Was 40 Years Ago Today, Todd, Lou Gramm of Foreigner, Christopher Cross, Bo Bice and Denny Laine of The Moody Blues doing Sgt. Peppers in it’s entirety.
(He had also been in a couple of Ringo’s “All Starr” bands)
