Next week is homecoming at the Perfect Child’s[sup]TM[/sup] high school, with all the theme days leading up to the dance on Saturday night. Tuesday is Wacky Tacky Day. My kid asked if I’d make boxers for her and her friend/coworker/classmate - they want to dress alike that day.
They both work at Skate Station. The mascot for the rink is Wally Gator. Wally wears rainbow-striped boxers. The girls plan to wear their work shirts, the boxers, possibly bowties made from the rainbow fabric, and toe socks with reindeer on them. Both Wacky and Tacky, n’est-ce pas?
We found the fabric at WalMart - all of $2/yard. It’s not a true rainbow - merely ROYGBV - I’ve been spared the indigo. Since they don’t want pockets and they don’t need flies, the sewing is quick and easy. Except for the brightness of the fabric. I was nearly blinded when I was laying the pattern out. Yeah, I know, I could have folded it inside-out, but I didn’t. I’ve got both pairs put together - all the stitching was done on the inside.
Last night after work, the girls pulled them on so I could see where they wanted the waistbands to fall and how long they wanted them hemmed. It was after 9PM. I was tired. It had been a long day. And I got to see these shorts in all their glory. I’m pretty sure that’s why I had nightmares.
Yeah, yeah, I know, I’m a good mommy and all that crap.
Tonight, I’ll sew the waistbands - I forgot to measure their waists, so I don’t know how long I need to cut the elastic. But that’s easy. I’ll also do the hems. Unfortunately, none of this sewing can be done on the wrong side fo the fabric. I expect my eyes will cross and I’ll be seeing multi-colored stripes for a week. Then I get to make 2 bowties… or maybe scrunchies - they haven’t decided yet. Once they’re all gussied up, I’ll try to take a photo and post it. I fear it may melt my camera.
Rainbow boxers - a fashion just waiting to be unleashed…
Actually, Bumb, she does know how - she just doesn’t like to. And with school, work, chores, swim team, and volunteer work, she’s got no time to do anything. Whereas I don’t have a life.
scout, sunglasses would be an excellent suggestion if I had prescription shades! Plus I’d look oh-so-cool!
The rainbow you described is actually the gay/lesbian/bisexual/transgender Pride Flag…
and boxer shorts in that colour pattern have been popular among the fags and dykes of my acquaintence for years
They’re actually quite hard to get hold of… you could set up a manufacturing plant, go wholesale and make a mint!
Ooooooh, someone else loves ‘evil’ (in terms of eye-damaging) fabrics.
I have a wonderful SCA tunic - the right half is black with large yellow dots (1.5 inch diameter), and the left half is yellow and black vertical stripes. I always make sure I wear it the morning after a large party.
OK, I’ve slacked off a bit. But last night, I got work done on both pair. The excess fabric has been snipped away, the raw edges have been folded over and stitched, the hems have been pinned up. Today I’ll stitch the hems and waists. The elastic pieces are cut to size and ready to be threaded thru. Maybe an hour to finish both of them.
Then I have to figure out how to make their bowties, and how big to make them. That will require thought and planning. I don’t if I can manage that. Scrunchies would have been easier. Durn kids…
