I was wondering if this was actually true. Were you raised in a religious background, an atheist background or an indifferent background? I have no interest in whether or not it took, or what your outlook is now.
I’ve been raised to believe that religion and science can coexist, when properly understood.
I was raised in a devoutly Catholic family in which going to Mass was not considered optional even if there was some sort of large natural disaster and the sheriff’s department had closed the roads.
Everyone in my family is supposedly Christian but I was never taught anything about religion, ours or otherwise.
Church Of The Nazarene for many years.
I was raised in a house that was entirely secular - not even prayers at thanksgiving. However, I was not told “We’re Atheists, there is no God” or anything like that. God or the lack thereof was just…irrelevant.
Bit of Judaism, bit of Christianity, all of the holidays, none of the observances. My parents were totally indifferent except when religion meant presents or food. I’m currently an apatheist.
Raised religiously in a sense, though there wasn’t much until I went to Hebrew School in 3rd grade.
My parents raised me religiously. Almost every day, in fact.
I picked “religiously,” but I was also taught science and how it lets us understand the world around us.
Raised religiously.
Where are all the people raised to worship science?
Raised Roman Catholic, conservative in practice (fancy-pants high Mass, kneeling during the Consecration, none of that shitty twinky-ding-dong music a la Marty Haugen, stay through the closing hymn and you’d better be puking if you want to get out of going to church) but liberal in theology (same-sex marriage, Jesus was a socialist, evolution–though perhaps as influenced, intended, or forseen by God–and not creationism, etc.).
Also attended a Catholic kindergarten and grade school (K-8), a Catholic high school, and a Jesuit (Catholic) university (two, technically, since I studied abroad for a semester). So that’s eighteen years of religious instruction, all told (before someone challenges me on the math, I took five years for my undergrad).
Unfortunately for Mom, I ended up an atheist and lil’ bro is a Buddhist.
It’s so *cute *how you think this poll is going to have any effect on him whatsoever.
Not sure what to check. My parents raised me pretty much indifferently (afaik they’re religious, but they don’t really care), but we on the other hand I had to take christianity lessons on the same standing as math or science for several years in elementary school and everyone had to pray every day before class.
Catholic. Loosely practiced, but Catholic. As a child, I used to say my prayers before bed every night. Went to CCD every week. Did First Holy Communion.
Our Father

Now I Lay Me Down to Sleep
I was raised Hindu.
My family gradually became much less devoutly Catholic as I moved through my “tween” and into my teen years. This coincided with my Dad’s loss of his faith, which when I was very young was very strong, but he eventually became an atheist (because of his experiences as a physician, or for other reasons, I never quite knew and he didn’t tell me). So we went from going to church every week, me doing the whole confession/communion/confirmation thing, to all of us pretty much not doing anything, all in the space of about 5 years.
Catholic. Liberal and loose, but Catholic. Went to Catholic schools most of my entire education.
Cradle Catholic, raised in a practicing and mostly conservative family. My father has been a church organist since before I was born, so I got early groundings in liturgy, doctrine, and theology. Oh, and I attended Catholic schools from 2nd grade through college graduation (except the two years we lived in England).
