I used to think this until I watched An Unreasonable Man . As much as I didn’t want to admit it, I really don’t think that’s his angle.
Either way you feel about him, it’s an interesting movie.
I’ll admit I haven’t seen the movie but I have a really hard time believing in Nader’s integrity. His actions speak for themselves. Keep in mind his actions in 2000 didn’t just hurt the Democrats, he screwed the Green Party that nominated him as well. The best course of action for the Green Party would have been to cut a deal with the Democrats. Drop out of some close states in exchange for a Democratic pledge to support some Green items in their platform. If the Greens were absolutely against making any deals, then their best strategy would have been to concentrate their limited resources in places were they would have gotten the most votes - in solidly blue states where people would have figured it was safe to switch votes from Gore to Nader or solidly red states where people would have figured it made as much sense to waste a vote on Nader as on Gore. But Nader deliberately chose to concentrate on the battleground states where Gore and Bush were running close. This hurt the Greens because many people realized how close the vote would be and decided to back the Democrats. But because of the closeness of the votes in these states, these were the places were Nader had the best chance to take away enough votes from Gore to swing a state to Bush. Which is, in fact, what happened and what Nader happily called a victory.
My understanding is that Nader now publicly denies that he cost Gore the election. My guess is that he realized that claiming credit for getting George Bush elected President would not help him attract voters in future elections. He needs to convince idealistic voters that his platform was something bigger than personal revenge.

and just tore into Ralph for saying such a horrible thing.

Then Ralph calls him a bully and says he can’t se him just a black screen.

I’d like to claim credit for having posted the “Fuck you, Ralph Fucking Nader” thread 8 years ago, when he was a lying, duplicitous tool. I believe that Chronos (although I’m not sure, and can’t search) came in and posted the most eloquent post about “when bush does blah, say there was no difference.” it was a beautiful post. But mine was much more accurate.

I respect Shepard Smith out of all the Fox talking heads and good on him for calling bullshit on Nader and trying to get a retraction from him. Nader was clueless and unapologetic. How can a man who witnessed the civil rights movement in the 60’s use a phrase like “Uncle Tom” in this day and age? His words belittled Obama’s accomplishment that American voters can look past a person’s color and vote for the more qualified of two candidates. He lost all relevancy in American politics long ago. Only 1% of the voters cast a vote for him on Tuesday. He should take it as a sign and shuffle off the stage.
Ralph Nader is so bitter he eats raw lemons like they were apples-and complains they’re too fucking sweet. Honestly, as someone on a LJ community said, it makes me want to go get me a Corvair and go wreck myself.
The thing is, he gave Nader several opportunities to back away, and Nader stuck by it.
He’s an old fool, and in old fools the first thing to go is often their sense of decorum and decency.
