A few years ago, I was going through my mail and almost threw out what looked like junk mail from the rental car company I use. It was in fact a notice of a $25 charge from the company, for informing the Denver police that I had been driving one of their cars which was photographed speeding while I was on a business trip months earlier. I hadn’t had a traffic ticket in over twenty years, but I had apparently missed ‘Reduced Speed’ signs in a work zone.
When I called the Denver police to pay the fine, I asked them why they hadn’t contacted me. They said that because it was a rental car driven by an out-of-state motorist, they just let the rental car company’s notice take care of that.
So if I hadn’t opened that mailing from the rental company - which didn’t even look like a bill - I could have had a $40 traffic ticket quietly snowball into a big deal. A more cynical person might even question the incentive for governments to tacitly easing up on such notifications *until *they’ve snowballed.
You ignore apparent dunning notices at your own peril. Unscrupulous organizations (like the company which created that RNC mailing) know this, and wouldn’t be using such tactics if what you say above were true.
Incidentally, I *do *pay my bills promptly, in most cases automatically. And since I travel a lot and want to make sure that I don’t miss infrequent billings like water and sewage, I pay those in advance (I pay extra so that the next two billings will be covered).
It would be redundant for me to point out that you’re an insensitive ass since that’s already been said. But might I point out that you’re also an idiot, living in a delusional world where private enterprise is a religion, and no private business could ever make a billing mistake or ever do anything sleazy for financial gain. But you forgot to mention the obvious corollary to this gibberish. Which is that total government surveillance, police brutality, and roaming gangs of vigilantes are all perfectly OK, too, because all you have to do is obey the law and none of that will ever be a problem. You believe that, too, amirite? Of course you do.
Compassion is a feeling, so is empathy, tolerance, patience and, of course, love. That these feelings might hold sway over my reasoning mind? I’ve better things to worry about.
When we see shitty behavior by the Dems, we acknowledge it. If you check the “Stupid Liberal” thread, you will see plenty of instances where we admit that a Democrat did something stupid and/or disgusting.
What’s telling is that you, personally, never call out your side for its lunacy. You’ll defend the fuck out of it, because you seem to think that any member of the Republican party shits diamonds out of a platinum asshole, and the Dems are boiling and eating babies [note: I’m going for hyperbole here. I’m not suggesting that you think that about the Democratic Party].
The republicans catch a lot of shit on this board. Not just because the membership skews Left, but also because there seems to be a disproportional imbalance. Republicans generally seem to make bigger gaffes, and make them more often.
Yeah, a very left leaning board. We know that because everybody knows that America is a center-right country, and American people essentially conservative. Everybody knows that, which is why nobody questions it.
It’s the blaming victims for the actions of their predators that makes you a sociopath. It’s your lack of comprehension that makes you a fool. It’s your lack of communication skills that makes you vague.
Indeed. Bricker and Shodan and GusNSpot and magellan and Bone and Sam Stone and martin hyde and plenty others disagree with me all the time without being sociopaths about it. It ain’t hard to disagree with me and not be a sociopath; virtually everyone falls into that category.
Probably because you’re attempting to defend some pretty scummy behaviour based on legal technicality and ‘they do it too!’
And the harder you try, the more transparent your partisan, “I can defend any behaviour, no matter how scummy!”, shines through. And it reveals something very unattractive about you, whether you’re right or wrong on your technicality.
Yuck! And you just can’t stop yourself from continuing to keep on swinging! (Feel like I need a shower after reading your lame defences of this action!) It makes my skin crawl just reading it all!
Not at all. Why would that surprise me? Do you think I’m part of a hive mind, that we all agree on everything, even that I think all progressives are non-douchey?
To be fair, I don’t think Bricker is defending the behavior of the Republicans, he admits its scummy. What he is doing is asserting that “the other side” does it to. Sure, the “it” they do isn’t equivalent, and sure it makes him look like an asshole, but, that’s not the important thing. The important thing is that he believes that, by pointing out some flaw in someone else, he will feel better about the choices he makes in whom he supports. As long as everybody is a little bit dirty, he feels better about himself that the people he tends to support are filthy.
Fish gotta swim, birds gotta fly, Bricker’s gotta Bricker.
The truly repugnant thing about Bricker in this thread is he does seem to be asserting that the “it” is equivalent. He thinks that the scummy DNC tactic of funneling voluntary donations from Bernie supporters to the DNC without letting the supporters know is equivalent to trying to fool people into believing they owe money to the RNC and are actually delinquent in their account. Both are scummy, one is an order of magnitude more than the other. I don’t know about you, but I have to constantly guard against the latter kind of shit with my octogenarian mother who seems to have a huge target on their back. YMMV.
The one thing that is totally clear to me is that any pitting made by Bricker is empty and worthless as somewhere in the world somebody else is doing something roughly equivalent and this makes anything he says about a specific case devoid of meaning.
Wait, what point is it that you think can be supported by searching the entire SDMB? That the SDMB is left-leaning? No one denies that. That democrats are perfect and flawless? No one has ever said that (certainly it’s not a frequently stated or supported position).
I think it’s true that Republicans get pitted a lot more than Democrats do. IME, leftists here tend to pit actions from Republicans; rightwingers tend to complain that leftists aren’t pitting actions from Democrats, instead of just starting the threads their own damn selves.
As an example, that thing about the DNC and Sanders? Totally pittable. I would’ve supported the pitting. Especially if it had been a straightforward pitting, not a backhanded pitting of leftist Dopers (“Look at this terrible thing DNC did! Everyone, look at me, being very honest and straightforward and fairminded. Don’t you wonder why leftist Dopers can’t be as fairminded as me?”)
