Random Math Stuff

X squared + 2x + 1 = X+1 squared. X squared-1=x-1 times x+1.

Cool. Did you figure that out all on your own, or did you need help  ?

pi=3.141…

Yes, that is from memory.

Don’t ask.

Hey KJ.

I’m asking.

Number of seconds in a year = pi * 10^7

That’s accurate to around 3%.

It’s accurate to around 0.3%. Much less impressive the way I had it before. :o

Assuming a non-leap year, and assuming 1 calendar year, I get an error of -0.380750456%. That a difference of 33 hours, 21 minutes, and 13.464 seconds.

It’s not bad. Perfect for doing physics problems where you need to give answers correct to 2 decimal places.

Ah, I know. I’m just giving you a hard time.

Here’s an interesting one I ran into in a class I’m taking now:

The arctan of the square root of 3 is 60 degrees.

This can be written as:

arctan( sqrt(3) ) = 60 degrees

So what is the solution to the following?

arctan( -sqrt(3) / -1 )

A. I figured it out on my own.
B. pi=3.14159265358979323846264338327950288419716939957291…

Equation A ties in with Pythagorean’s Theorem.

-120 degrees, or 240 degrees.

My rendition was also from memory.

You are correct, sir. Can I buya a beer?

1/243 = 0.0411522633744…
cos(20 deg)*cos(40 deg)*cos(60 deg)*cos(80 deg)=1/8, exactly

It’s good to know that today’s youth have enough time after four hours of homework, reading Doomspell Tournament, and pondering the existence of the mindset of millions to find and memorize pi to a rather useless number or digits.

Here’s one for you, alloran: if a hen and a half can lay an egg and a half in a day and a half, how long would it take one hen to lay six eggs?

Everyone else: no helping him!

And I had trouble with 17+15 while playing Hearts today. The reliance I have on calculators…ugg.

One that I noticed recently:

Number of minutes in two years: 1,051,892
Number of bytes in a megabyte: 1,048,576 (two to the twentieth power)

Also less than 0.3% error, even less if you take the number of minutes in a year from a song (I can’t remember the title, can anyone help?), “five hundred twenty-five thousand, six hundred minutes”.

Argh, I should look at my posts clearer. That should be approximately 0.3% error, not less than. My bad.
