Random Statistics

No, more random than that.

So, I just read an article that cites the journal Pediatrics with the following useful bit of information:

In the years 1990 through 2002, 208,800 people between the ages 5 to 18, inclusive, were sustained cheerleading-related injuries.

I can’t help but wonder, given the phrase “cheerleading-related,” if that means the stat includes folks who may have been caught in cheerleader crossfire or some such.

Anyway, what random stats have you got to share with the class today?

“cheerleader crossfire” is an odd mental picture…

on one hand, you could have cheerleaders from rival high schools shooting each other…or you could have them flinging the tiny girls at each other…

either way, it’s all good

In 2002, toilet, shower, and bathtub accidents sent 290,180 victims to emergency rooms in the US. From here

In 2002, 47 people in the US were victims of shark attacks. Data on how many went to emergency rooms was not available. From here

Sadly, nowhere near as entertaining as the notion of “cheerleader-related injuries”

I had a cheerleading-related injury back in High School. I can’t tell the story in mixed company however, as much as I’d love to.

I heard today that sometime in February iTunes sold their one billionth song.

According to the US Census Bureau, there are over 9,000,000 milk cows in the United States.
