When I left for work this morning, around 8:45 AM, there was a pretty blue stroller leaning against my mailbox. Not mine.
I park my car on a sort of shoulder strip that’s off the road, so I dragged the stroller away from the mailbox and put it in the middle of this strip, hoping the owner would claim it.
What I can’t figure out is what it’s doing there. Or rather, why it’s been abandoned, since it was probably dragged there by some well-meaning individual who thought it was mine. I have no children. I have thought of a few options:
- Maybe someone was walking their kid, and picked them up/took them out of the stroller and then…what? Walked off without the stroller?
- Maybe it got blown away from someone’s house? But it wasn’t that windy last night, and it wasn’t there when I got home from work (5 PM).
- Someone wanted to give it away and saw that I was relatively of child-bearing age.
- It’s a none-too-subtle but obscure way of telling me I should have kids.
- It was dumped ().
- ???
Thoughts? And what do I do if no one comes to pick it up? I don’t really want to have a stroller outside my front door, it looks like I can’t be arsed to pick up my stuff. I kind of want to just throw it away. How long do I have to leave it out there?
I see abandoned strollers around San Fran fairly often - several times per year. Who knows why people do what they do?

Take one of those “have you seen this child?” fliers from the weekly junk mail, and tape it to the stroller. Then leave the stroller outside a Starbux.
I’m a new parent, but I assume that there’s no guarantee that The Dude will take his first steps in the house. We could be anywhere. And when he does, I certainly hope Mrs. Dvl doesn’t expect me to drag the now-useless stroller back with me!
Or maybe your neighborhood is one of those super-progressive places like Madison, Wisconsin. They had a Red Bike programme for a while – basically, there were a slew of red-painted bikes that anyone could use. Blue Stroller programme?
I have a friend who has a special double, side-by-side stroller for her twins. She often used to leave it in her front yard when she’d just used it to take them to and from a local park, as it was unwieldy to try and maneuver through the front door or through the gate into the back yard.
One day, a few hours after using it, she noticed it wasn’t in the front yard where she left it. She ended up driving by the local park later that day on her way somewhere and noticed her stroller - someone had taken it from her front yard and used it to transport their kids to the park - the stroller had someone else’s baby clothes and toys in it. She pulled over, emptied the stroller of the foreign items, and shoved it into her minivan (and yes, she was sure the stroller was hers).
So, maybe someone “borrowed” the stroller that showed up near your mailbox. I’d just leave it for a few days, if I were you, and then if no one comes for it donate it or call a charitable organization to come pick it up.
Although AskKnotts’ suggestion is rather awesome…
