Randy Johnson has a perfect game against the Braves

Wow. I wish I’d seen it. I love Randy Johnson, and I’m so glad he gets this feather in his cap of a brilliant career.

13 K’s…that’s high for a perfect game. Props to the Big Unit.

Awesome. I’m very happy the Big Unit got the perfecto. He’s an amazing pitcher, and I really hope he winds up in the Hall of Fame.

High point of a lack-luster season, so far. I mean, all day yesterday the refrain, *Swept, At home. By *Montreal! kept going through my head.

Keeping my fingers crossed that this will spark the team for the rest of the season.

DD

Only 117 pitches to get those 13 K’s, too. Very impressive. I think that’s the second most strikeouts ever in a perfect game, one behind Koufax, which isn’t bad company.

I saw it. The Braves fans were cheering for Randy at the end. That was touching.

The Diamondbacks though all looked like they were in walkers though when they ‘ran’ to the mound to mob Randy.

Not much doubt of that, with a career winning percentage over 66%, an ERA of 3.10. and five Cy Youngs. He’s a mortal lock.

Congrats to him.

Wow, that’s cool. I didn’t know until I saw this thread. Way to go, Unit.

:smack:

I have directv specifically to get baseball (and footy); I’ve cancelled appointments around AZ matches as I adore Mr Finley; I even rang up mum this evening and reminded her to tune in as she’s had a crush on Randy Johnson since he was with Montreal – and in the 6th the bloody satellite went out cos of rain (cloud) fade :frowning:  :frowning:

Much as I hate to root for him and the 'Backs, I’d have applauded that effort.

Plus, he killed that bird. And John Kruk (almost)!

I was at Angels Stadium, and about 45 minutes before that game started they had the last half inning of the perfect game on. The crowd cheered like crazy when Johnson finished off Lopez.

That’s what’s awesome about baseball. Here was a game with no bearing on either team involved in the contest I was attending, and yet 20,000 people went bananas over the game simply because they understood the magnitude of the accomplishment. It was an expression of appreciation of the game itself, its history. Best sport there is, folks.

And of course Johnson is a mortal lock for Hall enshrinement. He’s a greater pitcher than most of the pitchers already in.

Perez, actually. Lopez is now with Baltimore.

Oy. My beloved Braves … nullified by Randy Johnson. I was happy for him even despite the fact that it was my team. Hey, you know what? If it had to happen, there are few current pitchers, if any, decidedly better than this man. I’m glad it was someone who’s worthy of it.

Ditto… I’m a fan of his and I’m happy for him.

I saw Jason Schmidt one-hit the Cubs (wasn’t much of a hit either) and strike out 13. I was surprised to get home and find I’d seen the second-best pitching effort of the day.

He did it to the Braves - couldn’t have been scripted any better!

Randy Johnson - ugliest man in sports.

Anyway, good for him. They kept mentioning it during the Miami-Indiana game so I switched over to TBS to catch it.

Another feather in the man’s cap. A perfect game, World Series ring, World Series MVP, 5 Cy Youngs, a no hitter. First ballot lock. The only question is who is going in with him.

Question: If Roger, Randy and Greg retire at the same time, will that be the greatest Hall of Fame pitching class ever inducted?

Gammons said last night that with Randy’s off season routine, he could see him pitch for another 3 solid years.

Roger Clemens looks like he can pitch until he approaches Satchel Paige’s age range.

I couldn’t be anymore excited about Randy’s accomplishment last night. He’s had a rough season with very little support from our offense and it was really starting to get to him. From the end of the 7th, I could see this sort of “If we’re gonna win this damned ballgame, I’m gonna have to do it myself.” look on his face. And he did! YAAY! Hammock looked so excited for him, his whole team did. I love the DBacks. They’re the only team I’ve seen thus far (granted, I’ve only truly followed the game this season and last) that has a serious outward show of emotion for good plays and player accomplishments. Randy deserved this game, he pitches his heart out every. single. game.

And as for his age, bah. Finley said it best during an interview last night. “How old would you be if you didn’t know how old you were?”

Randy’s got plenty of time. Jesus, anyone remember Mike Myers (DBack turned Mariner)? Randy will be able to outpitch that clown WELL into his 60’s. Barring his arm falling clean off (and from some of his pitching photos, this appears to be a distinct possibility), Randy doesn’t need to worry about being too old for baseball for a looong time.

First eligible year, even, no question.
