Randy Quaid and wife in jail

Forget the hotel bill---- I can’t believe the cops don’t care that he french-kissed his underage daughter.

“Hey, uhh… I might be late to pick you guys up.”
“Why, do you have a job interview today, daddy?”
“No honey, I’ll probably just be waaaay too drunk.”
“Oh, that’s good, we don’t want you drinking and driving.”
“Oh, I’ll be driving. I’ll just be too shit-faced to remember to pick you guys up.”
“Ok, bye, daddy.”
“Bye, Pumpkin.”

Well the court doesn’t automatically keep the money just 'cause you fail to appear.

This would defeat the whole process of bail bondsmen. For example if I have a bond of $10,000 and I miss my court date, I am classed as “Failure to Appear.” Then the bonds agency will go after me. If the court kept the bail regardless, there would be no incentive for the agency to go after me, because the bond would be lost already. This is how bondmen make their money, they keep 5% to 15% of the bail.

If the person were to fail to appear and the court immediately kept all the money, the agency would go broke in a minute.

The court certainly DOES have the right to keep the money, but they always give an agency or a person a chance to explain and recover it.

I worked at a temp agency and they put me in the front office of a bond agency. We wouldn’t even start to look for anyone till after they failed to appear.

Depending on the type of crime, they often could be rebonded out at the same rate.

For instance, if you had a $1,000 bail for indecent exposure (or some other nuisance offence) and failed to appear, the agency wouild come looking for you. Once they had you the agency would recover the $1,000 and keep $100 of it. Then the court would set a new bail (usually it was the same for petty things) and the agency would re-bond you out, though they may take 15% this time instead of 10%.

I’ve done paperwork where after 18 months the court has refunded the agency the bond, because they were able to come up with it.

As I said, the court has every right to keep the money and technically can do so. So the first time Quaid probably got his money back and was rebonded out at a higher rate. Then he could’ve gotten it back again. Or a portion of it, or however he worked it out with the agency if he used a bond agency.

The whole point of bond isn’t to make money, it’s to get the person into court. A celebrity is a mixed thing. On one hand they can’t jump bond easy, as they are well known. On the flip side, they have more money to flee if they decide to do so. On the other side, if they do flee, since they are famous, they will be unlikely to ever get work as an actor (or whatever the celebrity does), 'cause it’s well known what they did and how they fled

You know, it’s strange. I read about this yesterday and the only thing I could think of was that I was sure Randy Quaid had been dead for at least a year. I distinctly remember reading about that, almost certainly on IMDb. I have no idea who I’m confusing him with at this point.

He needs to make another movie so he can afford to pay his bills.

You may be thinking of Patrick Swayze who died last year?

David Carradine?

Really, won’t someone think of the studio intern whose entire semester credit depends on keeping the National Lampoon’s Vacation franchise alive?

Randy Quaid’s career?

Happens to me every now and then. I’m starting to think it’s one of the signs that we’re slipping between almost identical parallel universes. I hear of someone being alive or of having recently died, and I’m going “WTF? That person died N years ago! I’m sure of it!”

Funny how the math works out almost exactly right. He has done this before.

Aunt Edna: Why don’t you just ask him for the money, Eddie? He sure as Hell can’t take a hint.
Cousin Eddie: Well, I didn’t want to ask you, Clark, you know, but could you maybe spare a little extra cash?
Clark: Sure, Eddie, how much do you need?
Cousin Eddie: About $52,000.

He and his wife were expelled from Actors Equity a few years ago after his shenanigans, both on-stage and off, here in Seattle. His career is in the dumper. I think he’s certifiably crazy, and possibly her too.

I was friends with his much younger sister in college and got to hear some strange stuff early on. The other brother is Dennis Quaid who did pretty well for himself. The sister was much more similar to Randy in looks and personality than Dennis unfortunately. It is a very strange family including their parents.

Please do tell. You can’t mention something like this and not give us details.

Wow, are you Stephanie Plum?

Well, watch out, cause-a Vinnie-who-runs-the-agency might decide he needs youse out collarin’ the lowlifes ‘stead-a just answerin’ phones. Getchaself some Mace and a pair o’ cuffs and maybe a hooker-turned-plus-size-bounty-hunter partner.

Tragic.
