Rant-a Claus is coming to town! (December mini-rants)

I’m afraid those crop up in every organization. But the religious ones are worse, as they get to use “God” (their own little closed-minded version) to shore up their prejudices.

Try to ignore them. I just tell myself “I can shrug this off, but they have to live with their hatred all day, every day.”

.

As an aside, I met with the minister of a church I was casually attending, and told him that I doubted I could join, as there were some dogmas I disagreed with.

He laughed and said “Good for you! We wouldn’t want you if you couldn’t think for yourself. In fact, my advice is to NOT join a church that matches your beliefs 100%. How would you ever grow, and how much could you contribute to a healthy discussion if everyone agreed with everyone else?” I’m happy to be in a church full of doubters.

I joined, kept disagreeing, kept doubting.

Yes, I can shrug this off, but what of some young person reading it? How does it affect them?

If it were me, I would counter it with something like

#1 Jesus loves us all

#2 ‘Before you comment on the mote in your neighbor’s eye, remove the plank from your own.’

Disclaimer, I’m Jewish and so likely got the quote wrong.

Mini Rant

Went to a mall yesterday. There was a confectioner called Lolly Pops. They were very expensive, so I assumed the candies they made were of high quality. They were in fact, sub- Goobers. Deeply deeply, disappointing. I urge you all to avoid them.

Our local mall has one of those, and another candy store that is also more expensive than buying candy at the movie theater! :scream_cat: It blows my mind. One tip: don’t buy the giant Reese’s cup. It’s impressively, but going by weight, it’s a much better deal to buy smaller Reese’s cups. And if you have a Trader Joe’s nearby, the dark chocolate peanut butter cups are a million times better.

As a young person who grew up a long time ago: well, badly, of course. But even without prejudice, some people are just going to hate you for no good reason, and it’s important to learn to identify and get past that. Since you can’t protect people from stupidity, ignorance, or hatred, it’s best to teach them to deal with it early.

Someone is messing with me at work. It is the only explanation. A couple months ago, my ergonomic, wireless mouse was taken from my desk, dongle and all. Then, last week, My earbuds were taken off my desk WHILE I WAS AT WORK. Then, this morning, my bump cap was missing. I get the earbuds and the mouse, but who would want my gross, sweaty hat? And its only happening to me. Someone must be getting a kick out of this. I just want my earbuds back.

On Saturday, my gf went shopping with friends in Ligonier. Meanwhile, on the home front, Kizzy vomited up her breakfast along with deer guts (the reticulum is obvious). She vomited on our bed as well as on the floor by the bed.

I spent the rest of the day fixing things. I tore the bed apart, laundered everything, used the carpet cleaner, etc.

When my gf got home everything was back to normal except for me.

I ordered some embellishments for my new 2023 Hyundai Santa Cruz on eBay. They made it all the way from China to a facility on the west side (from the zip code of the DDU) of my city. No one can tell me what the tracking number was in the United States or what last mile shipper it handed off to. It’s been sitting there since December 1. I could be there in about 20 minutes if I knew where it is. When I contacted the seller for some info, they just refunded it to my VISA card.

I renewed my driver’s license on November 8. The Ohio BMV gives you a paper “temporary license” while they process and mail the new one. I called the BMV last week and was told that they allow 35 days for it to arrive before they resend it. They told me to call back on Dec 13 if I still didn’t receive it. The mail ran a little bit ago, and still no license.

Why does everything have to be a hassle?

I get this. I have Comcast too. I wish I didn’t but the city says that’s what I get. They are a pain in the patootie. My brother says I should switch my wireless service to Comcast/Xfinity. I don’t effing think so.

Is that the same as Lolli & Pops? I’ve never tried any of the stuff they make, but they’re my go-to source for international candies.

Because the Universe hates us.

This rant isn’t quite current, but it’s new here.

In early Oct the tap feature on my main credit card quit working. Damn. Call them and they’ll snail-mail me a new one with the same number. Meantime I can still swipe & insert the old one. Great. 2 weeks later it’s not here. Call and ask “what’s up?” “We only sent it 5 days after you requested it, the mail is kinda slow, give it another week or so.” Great. I wait. Nothing.

Of course a couple weeks before I ordered the card I’d moved households. And yes, I’d promptly changed my address with these folks. But maybe they’d sent it to the old address and I already knew the local PO would take about 14 extra days to get a forwarded item to my new place 3 whole miles from my old place. So I wait some more. Don’t want to tell them the new one is lost and then have it arrive tomorrow; if lost I’ll have to get a new number and we all know what a hassle that is.

Finally give up and call them back. “Where exactly did you mail it to?” Answer: A residence I moved out of 12 years ago. And to the best of my knowledge I’d had no relationship with this bank while I lived there. Go figure?

Now of course that means there really is a lost new card somewhere out in space. So they cancel my non-tappable card, assign me a new CC number they can’t tell me, and promise to Fedex a new card to me today to arrive tomorrow. Just 6 weeks after I started this process and now I need to change my card on file at all my vendors. Which turns out to be 30 places. So far.

The only good news is the Fedexed card did indeed arrive the very next day at my current address as promised. And now, 30 days after I got it, it hasn’t been compromised. Yet.

Sigh. Whine!

I may well have the name wrong. The only thing that I know for sure is their made in store candy was terrible. They should be ashamed.

I can get a lot of international candy at the Soviet market near me. I also visit this wonderful place when I visit my family in Florida. They have cherry caramel candy lipstick among a truly splendid variety of other things.

ETA

I did remember the name incorrectly. It’s Lolli & Pops. They suck.

Wow! Good to know. I was sort of afraid they were all looks.

The only place I’ve ever bought store-made items is from a shop in Maine. Besides having loads of tasty chocolate, they have a small selection of nostalgic candies (Bottle Caps are nostalgic now???).

The only “bottle caps” candy I know of was something that was ancient nostalgia stuff for my parents when I was kid. I’m in my 60s now.

All jokes aside, wasn’t there an old candy called ‘corn balls’?
It was make from chopped popcorn that had hot caramel poured on it while it sat in a 2 inch wide ball-shaped mold. The mold was then cooled and the ‘corn balls’ were removed.

I think that they were sold by the dozen in plastic bags?

I remember seeing it or something like it. I don’t remember the name. I think they also came dyed in scary-lurid colors only kids would be willing to eat.

LOL!

They were apparently introduced in 1972, making them slightly older than I thought they were. I’m sad that they’re not really cap-shaped anymore. I remember the ‘fun size’ of these (two or three candies in a paper wrapper) being given out in class for some reason, and kids being especially excited to get all root beer or a root beer and a cola.

My country (obviously a fucking third world country) has spectacularly bad energy management. We have rolling blackouts, and have had, since… I dunno, 2014.

Today is 12:00 SAST to 16:30 SAST.

I have a UPS for my fibre connection but it cannot support my laptop, certainly not for four and a half hours.

I love this country but fucking hell. We have a nuclear power station. We have abundant coal for the others. We have Lesotho, with abundant hydroelectric power as a neighbor. We sell power to Zimbabwe at a discount; but we can’t get domestic power right.
