I’m gonna side with kanicbird on this. The Senator has no need to be in Iraq, nor do any other Senators. Ya know why? Because there’s already a lot of people there. Smart people in the employ of the government, many of whom are writing detailed reports and sending them up the chain. I feel confident that anyone reading these reports would be quite well versed in the goings-on in Iraq. It would not surprise me to learn that Senator Clinton has read many of these reports, if not all of them. I do not believe that she will learn anything she did not already read in a report.
US Senators should not be going to Iraq. It’s expensive (Senators travel with staff). It’s potentially dangerous (insurgents and what-not). And it serves no purpose except propaganda and campaign fodder and they should pay for that shit themselves.
Which is it? You don’t like her as your current Senator, but you suggest that she’s gonna “stick it to you” by vacating the office and running for President in '08.
 It’ll certainly do wonders for our government if everybody takes written reports as gospel and nobody investigates everything. Think of how much time that’ll save.
As an avid supporter of the liberation of Iraq, I’m grateful that our elected officials are not taking for granted the reports generated by the people who have the most incentive to create reports favorable to their viewpoint and are going to see things for themselves – that’s particularly true of those who had concerns about the war going into it. Grateful, but not surprised – I expect no less from people in whom such trust has been placed by the voters.
I think I disagree with Senator Clinton much much more often than I agree. And I’m proud that she’s my Senator. She’s no Moynihan, but she ain’t bad. Certainly better than that do-nothing dope Lazio would have been.
And what will you say if she does run in '08? That she changed her mind? Seems like wanting to have your cake, and eat it too, but maybe that’s just me.
I have no problem with a Senator going on a junket to see what’s going on in the world concerning national interests.
I believe in what Tip O’Neil said, all politics are local. As a New York State resident I have a problem with her. I can’t point to much of anything she has done to benefit me as a NYS resident. As a native of Illinois and later Arkansas why did she come to NY to run? What loyality or interests did she have to run here?
This is not an anti-Dem point of view. I didn’t vote for Chuck Schumer either but I’ve grown to like him and will vote for him the next time he runs. (I worked with a guy who became a good friend who grew up with the Senator who said he was an asshole as a kid, during jr high, as a teenager etc. With a personal endorsment like that how could you like a guy?) Schumer has championed and brought projects into Western New York that I can appreciate. Senator Clinton has not.
The American taxpayers have already coughed up $87 billlion for this, and are now being asked for another $80+ billion. I’d be pissed if the people charged with approving these expenditures weren’t going over to see for themselves what was happening.
spooje, you were being sarcastic, right? That was a whoosh? If not, can I be your personal accountant? I’ll write you lots of detailed reports all about where your money’s gone and why everything’s being taken care of just fine so you don’t have to worry about a thing.
Last I checked, she was exonerated of any wrongdoing in Whitewater. Could you tell specifically what crimes you think she committed and specifically what your evidence is?
Is this supposed to prove something about Hillary’s intentions? Anybody can be asked about in a poll. Pollsters try all kinds of permutations, even very unlikely ones just to see what the results will be. It does not mean that the hypothetical candidates are actually planning anything.
By the way, I’m pretty sure that Rice has never announced any intention to run for the WH either.
I’m another person who doesn’t particularly like Hillary Clinton, nor do I like that she is my senator. Frankly, I’m still pissed that the only way she can think to boost the upstate economy is to lobby for an increase in casinos. Having said that, while I’ll admit I believe that her visit to Iraq has as much to do with publicity for herself as any legitimate needs to be there - that doesn’t mean that I don’t think she doesn’t have legitimate reasons to go.
Given some of the junkets that the US gov’t has paid for for Senators, Representatives, and sometimes governors and mayors, this isn’t even near the top of the list as frivolous. kanicbird, I think you’re barking up the wrong tree, here. Esp. when there are so many other legitimate things to be annoyed with her for.
On what evidence do you base this lastassertion? I have made no defence of Senator Clinton in this thread, and i’m perfectly willing to listen to genuine criticism of her. In fact, if you had bothered to read it, you would have noticed that i said specifically in my last post:
You have no evidence from this thread that i have “a knee jerk reaction of any criticism of Hillary,” because my reaction in this thread has so far merely been to point out the inadequacy and inconsistency of your own posts, and the apparent confusion you are in regarding exactly who you should be angry at, and why.
First it was Hillary, and now, by your own admission, it’s the media. Make up (what’s left of) your mind.
No, I just thought it was an interesting tidbit that I stumbled across looking for the cite you provided. Four years to go and they’re already polling. You’re allowed to think it’s not interesting. Speaking of your cite, why were they asking her about 2008 in June of 2003? I wonder if it’s a typo. No big deal, really. If she did say it, she’s allowed to change her mind. I won’t be surprised if she runs, nor will I be if she doesn’t.
No typo. It was a follow up to asking her about 2004. Basically she was constantly being asked about 2004 and when she’d say no, they’d say “what about 2008?” and she’d still say no.
Is she at least 30 years old? Is she a resident of New York State? Is she a US citizen? Then guess what? She is qualified to be a US Senator. And since she easily won an election for the office, you really need to accept this fact and move on with your life.
…And as a former high-powered lawyer, first lady of Arkansas and first lady of the United States, I’d say that on paper she’s got better qualifications than 90% of the people who become Senators.
And while I thought Whitewater was fishy, as was her cattle futures thing, that’s like decades ago. It’s been dragged through the mud, and no proof was ever found. So an honest person at some point has to accept that and move on. Ranting about whitewater today is just weak.
And what the fuck do you think she’s gonna find in her fact finding trip? She’s gonna be ther for what? A week? Two weeks? Three weeks? Just how much of the story is she gonna be able to unearth in that amount of time, assuming of course she’s actually looking? How much leg work is she gonna do? If she ain’t reading and trusting reports from others, she’s gonna need to take a leave of absence from her Senate gig.
OK thanks all, with your help I think I’ve figured out my issue w/ Hillary. She is like the person who just came off the street and now is your boss. I don’t have any respect for her, and don’t understand what others see in her. I really don’t care about her opinions on issues any more then any other person opinion, but I am bombarded by an overwhelming tusumi of her opions, this makes it worse every time I hear more from her.
