My first reaction was, “Who?” A little research shows that I do actually know this guy. He and his rapping partner Bun-B (together forming UGK) was featured in one of my all-time favorite rap songs, “Big Pimpin’” by Jay-Z. Here’s his verse:
Pimp C
Damn. I haven’t really been into UGK since before Pimp C went to jail, but I was brought up on Ridin’ Dirty…
well, shit. if I had me a 40 I’d tilt it to the side for him.
That’s a shame. The UGK album “Ridin Dirty” from about 10 years ago is a must have for rap fans. The new one is good too.
I almost started this OP, but half of this board is hostile towards hip hop and the other half thinks 50 Cent is “underground.”
It’s sad to see Pimp C become another syrup victim. I’m convinced that’s what it was until I hear otherwise - these guys grew up with DJ Screw and it’s just part of that culture down there. “International Players Club Anthem,” with Outkast, is one of my top-10 songs of the year.
KIDS, LAY OFF THE SIZZURP OR YOU’LL GET DEAD QUICK.
Thanks, because I wasn’t sure who he was either. Fortunately, the song’s on my iPod, so I’m listening now in tribute.
What is “syrup”?
“Purple Drank”, an illegal drink made from prescription cough syrup, apparently.
So you’re telling me that musicians with significant amounts of money who have access to really good drugs, are choosing to drink over the counter cough syrup?
Maybe its really good.
No, the good stuff (with codeine) isn’t over the counter, and that’s the favored flava. I suspect using OTC cough syrup is both a different high and a ghetto form of pecuniary emulation.
I think it reflects pretty accurately on the intelligence of said “musicians.”
I’m not hostile to hip-hop. De La Soul and Jurassic Five are musicians. Pimp C and others like him are hacks with unoriginal material. I can’t say I’m happy that this guy is dead, but he was an idiot for ODing on fucking cough syrup.
Dextromethorphan is an extremely potent dissociative/psychedelic. Purple drank doesn’t necessarily contain codeine at all.
He now gets to rest with his forefathers, Pimps A and B.
Not to mention his siblings Vitamin, Hi- and Washington D.
It’s my understanding that people who drink “sizzurp” are not interested in tripping, they want an opiate experience. The hip hop drug culture is not big on psychedelics, and aside from a small subset of “acid rap,” and Eminem’s well-known love of shrooms, there is little interest in hallucinogens among them. I sincerely doubt that anyone who drinks “sizzurp” is doing it because they want a dissociative psychedelic trip. I think that term pretty much always refers to codeine.
Dude, haven’t they ever heard of Oxycontin?
Best twofer of the year (so far). You two should be sitting up in Waldorf and Statler’s box!
Were those the guys who lived under the Cat in the Hat’s hat?
