Seriously People, Am I The Only Person Who Has Never Heard Of A "Pimp Cup"?

In my college speech class yesterday, one student was giving a speech on starting a glass blowing business. She mentioned how much money you could make with making even simple things, and gave as an example, “I went to California last week and saw a pimp cup that cost $1,200 retail and I could have made it in about 20 minutes for under $20.”

At the end of the speech, I asked her what a “pimp cup” was, and everyone in my class looked at me as if I had lived in a cave for 50 years. They thought it was funny that I had never heard of them.

I had no idea what a pimp cup was - I was thinking athletic supporter with rhinestones?

Am I the only one who has never heard of them?
When did this item and name for it become popular?
BTW, for those of you like myself who don’t have a clue, here is a link to show you what they are.

While I’d never heard the phrase, I was amused to see that the imagery “Pimp Cup” conjured in my mind (a gaudy, jewel-encrusted chalice) was pretty much spot-on.

Be of good cheer: I, too, had never heard of them before this moment.

Never heard of it, and my mind also went the jock strap route. That’s pretty damn stupid.

I have no idea.

I’m sure this student would sell one of those for $1,200. That person needs a reality check as to what the usual selling price would be. I’m really not disappointed I didn’t know what a pimp cup was. It’s tacky as a 8 inch orange shag carpet. I don’t need to add in a van, because 8 inch orange shag would be tacky anyplace.

My guess was a rhinestone bra. Ouch.

My guesses were:

  1. A kind of bullet-shaped hubcap.
  2. A cocktail involving Pimm’s Cup, the well-known English potation.

I figured it was some variant of the WonderBra. Make those babies shine like grocery produce.

I’d never heard of this, either.

A what?

:: checks OP’s link ::

I still don’t get it. What are they for? “Floss”? “Ice out”? Is there an English translation available?

I’d never heard of a Pimp Cup before this thread. I am tragically un-hip.:frowning:

Thank you all! I was beginning to wonder exactly how out of touch I am with things of the world…and seriously, every student (about 20 in that class) knew exactly what a pimp cup was. I even asked another class and they all knew what they were as well - I think I have reached a new, legendary level of “fuddy duddy” in their eyes.
BTW, the cup she was talking about for $1,200 was far more ornate, with swirls of glass as a base and a grand chalice resting on top - she said it was also suitable for holding a candle (although I think she meant for clueless individuals like myself).

I’m a spinster librarian and I knew what a pimp cup is. Compare: pimp stick.

I wasn’t sure but my guess was some flashy kind of mug that I have seen Snoop Dog holding…guess I was right.
But it must be a generational thing. And I am a couple generations away from using “pimp cup” in my every day life.

The real question is What can you do with it?

Never heard of it either.

I’ve never encountered the term before this thread.

It’s to hold your crunk, dawg.

Translated above.

Out of the loop. I never heard of them before either.

I’ve only just learned what a grill is.

What is crunk? I doubt I have any to hold. Such a sad life for Zathros.
