In my college speech class yesterday, one student was giving a speech on starting a glass blowing business. She mentioned how much money you could make with making even simple things, and gave as an example, “I went to California last week and saw a pimp cup that cost $1,200 retail and I could have made it in about 20 minutes for under $20.”
At the end of the speech, I asked her what a “pimp cup” was, and everyone in my class looked at me as if I had lived in a cave for 50 years. They thought it was funny that I had never heard of them.
I had no idea what a pimp cup was - I was thinking athletic supporter with rhinestones?
Am I the only one who has never heard of them?
When did this item and name for it become popular?
BTW, for those of you like myself who don’t have a clue, here is a link to show you what they are.
While I’d never heard the phrase, I was amused to see that the imagery “Pimp Cup” conjured in my mind (a gaudy, jewel-encrusted chalice) was pretty much spot-on.
I’m sure this student would sell one of those for $1,200. That person needs a reality check as to what the usual selling price would be. I’m really not disappointed I didn’t know what a pimp cup was. It’s tacky as a 8 inch orange shag carpet. I don’t need to add in a van, because 8 inch orange shag would be tacky anyplace.
Thank you all! I was beginning to wonder exactly how out of touch I am with things of the world…and seriously, every student (about 20 in that class) knew exactly what a pimp cup was. I even asked another class and they all knew what they were as well - I think I have reached a new, legendary level of “fuddy duddy” in their eyes.
BTW, the cup she was talking about for $1,200 was far more ornate, with swirls of glass as a base and a grand chalice resting on top - she said it was also suitable for holding a candle (although I think she meant for clueless individuals like myself).
I wasn’t sure but my guess was some flashy kind of mug that I have seen Snoop Dog holding…guess I was right.
But it must be a generational thing. And I am a couple generations away from using “pimp cup” in my every day life.
