I saw a bird that I can’t identify maybe you can help.
About the size of a robin, it seemed to be all black with a gray breast.
I tried to find it on birding sites, with no luck.
I live in Western PA
Can you be a little more specific? Long tail? Short tail? Beak length? Hooked beak or straight beak? Other markings? Stripes across the eye or tail? Wing patches? Spots or bars? Better yet, do you have a photo you can scan in for us to look at? It’s like trying to describe a dog by saying “it’s brown and black” - could be a beagle, greyhound, doberman, rottweiler, bloodhound, mutt, etc.
Understandably, you may have some problems with identifying it on a website. Several bird books and websites I have seen will have a picture of the male of the species as the ‘definitive’ picture, sometimes the female (in several species of birds they are quite different fom the male) and rarely, examples of the juvenile or alternate plumages (breeding plumage vs. non-breeding plumage; summer plumage vs. winter plumage).
[I mention this because we get these questions at work all the time from people wanting to know what kind of bird is at their feeder. The ones with the most information have the best chance of me identifying the bird. Sending me a photo gets my gratitude and home-baked cookies for that little extra effort. I’d be more than happy to help with more information. Otherwise, I can only best identify it as one of three major bird groups: LBrJ, LBlJ, or an LGJ.(Little Brown Jobbie, Little Black Jobbie, or Little Grey Jobbie)]
