Something for the Ornithologists...

I’ve got two questions for the birdwatcher experts out there:

  1. Recently, I’ve seen a bird I’ve never seen before and managed to get a couple of pictures of it. My Mom and brother, who are good at bird IDs don’t know what this is. Mom thinks it might be a warbler of some kind…

It’s almost all Olive Green with a sort of yellowish color in it. It’s not a tiny bird, but it is smaller than a robin. Bigger than a chickadee.
2) I recorded a bird song I’ve not heard before. It was really loud and, again, my Mom and brother are unable to identify it.

Pictures of the mystery bird and the mystery sound can be found on my Photobucket page here:

The picture quality isn’t great because I took the picture through a dirty window and the bird kept hopping or flying around and wasn’t in one place very long. I was lucky to catch the two pictures at the link.

By the way this is in Northern IL right near the WI border…

I hope someone out there can figure this out!

Some kind of flycatcher?

The Pacific Slope Flycatcher is green, pictured here. Wings on your seem to lack the barring though. Not sure if it’s in your area normally. Text says:

and it’s listed among “birds slightly smaller than a robin.”

From this amateur’s viewpoint, it looks like some sort of flycatcher (the little bit of a crest and the beak are making me think that). My Sibley for Eastern NA doesn’t have anything that really looks like that, though…most of the flycatchers in it have dark backs. Maybe it’s a juvenile?

Common Yellowthroat, female, is my guess.

I was thinking flycatcher – especially because of the tail. But would there be a juvenile this early into spring?

It doesn’t follow the behavior of the Pacific Flycatcher, though. It hopped around in my patio pit for quite some time. It only seemed to fly up to the edge of the pit or the top of the “fence” around the top the pit when it wanted to see things from a different perspective.

Wow, that is very close…the beak seems to skinny in that picture, though. This was a pretty “sturdy” beak.

Don’t forget about the mystery bird call – I’d really like to know what that bird is, too.

Definitely not a flycatcher - all of the small ones have wing bars.

I believe it’s a warbler of some kind, but I’m having trouble pinning it down because of the blurriness. It is, however, exceptionally drab, lacking almost all field marks.

Re ghardster’s proposal, I was thinking female Common Yellowthroat as well, but I was given pause by the unusually thick pinkish bill.

:smack:

Female Scarlet Tanager

I should have paid more attention to the description of size.

More images.

The wings on this bird are just a slightly darker olive color than the rest of the bird.

I’d seen the pictures of the scarlet tanager, but dismissed it because of the dark, almost black, markings on the wings…not to mention, the more pronounced yellow on the pictured birds and this bird was not bright.

It is very dull and monochromatic. Could the lack of definition of color be due to the cloudy day?
Anyone got any ideas on that mystery bird call? I did not see the bird that made that call, so I’m dying of curiosity of what it is…

True, the wings of a female Scarlet Tanager are usually a bit darker, but with that bill there’s not much else it could be.

Sounds good.

Now, how about that sound file I also have out on that link? It’s the video that should come up with the title screen “Mystery Bird Sound”

Anyone for mystery bird sound?

Bueller?
