Your poll has en error. For some inexplicable reason, where you meant to type “Ziggy Stardust,” it came out “Rebel, Rebel.”
Whole Lotta Love
Game over.
I could list probably a dozen Zeppelin riffs better than Heatbreaker but let’s leave at that for now.
In terms of formative riffs, it’s hard to get past Whole Lotta Love, Sunshine of Your Love and Satisfaction, with Smoke on the Water and Day Tripper also in that first breath…
Didn’t consider Ziggy, but yeah, that’s a good one. Not better than Rebel, Rebel, though, and I wanted to limit it to one per artist.
Whole Lotta Love I did consider.
*(I’m a) Soul Man. *
Play it, Steve!
As of this writing, every entry has at least two votes.
And there is a three-way tie for third place.
I would suggest pistols at dawn, sir, but I am not an early riser.
Would I be wrong to suggest Barracuda by Heart?
No you would not.
Peace of Mind - Boston.
Nice. That one never occurred to me.
I did think of - and dismiss - Boston, though.
Jeez, how’d you come up with that list? How could you leave off “Don’t Fear the Reaper” by Blue Oyster Cult?
And I am crazy, or is the opening riff – the most well-known part – of “Smoke on the Water” done on a keyboard?
Quite easily.
I think you’re crazy. Or maybe I am.
Sweet Home Alabama - Lynyrd Skynyrd
The Randy California version.
I don’t know if it counts as a “riff,” but my all-time favorite classic rock guitar passage is the Beatles on the Abbey Road medley, where McCartney, Harrison, and Lennon take turns ripping it up right before “and in the end…”
“November Rain” by Guns n Roses - definite winner there!
Nope, I wouldn’t classify that as a riff. I do love it, though.
Put me down for another one who is left wondering WTF is up with this list?
Edgar Winter’s Frankenstein? Guitar Riff?
Rush - YYZ
