They are ok, but generally smelly, barky, make messes and poop everywhere. Cats are the worst, because I don’t even own one but the goddamn neighbors let their cats roam everywhere and it seems like the little fucker always ends up in MY yard. And he is way too fast for the spray bottle.
I admit that my husband had a dog when I moved in with him, and I didn’t like that dog. But I wasn’t tempted to poison it. If I had hated it that badly, I believe we would have worked out a solution.
I love cats, especially mine. Not as much as I love humans, of course; as I have written elsewhere on this board, if forced to choose between the lives Mrs. Which & Who and that of Sarah Palin, I would grudgingly save the former governor. But I’d be filled with rage about it.
I used to be phobic about dogs, but therapy has cured me. That said my feelings towards them range from disgust to bare toleration. I wouldn’t deliberately hurt a dog, and if I see a dog that is in need of food or whatnot, and I am the only person around physically about to do so, I will provide it out of the desire to be a mensch. But when someone asks me if they can bring their dog to my house, the answer is a hell no, and if someone asks me to foster a stray, I’d refuse.
I love both cats and dogs. However, I would not want either to live with me, ever. Not allergic, just don’t like the messes and damage that pets do to a home. So where does that fall on your scale?
I never much liked cats and living with some has only worsened my opinion of them. The only reason I don’t say -100 is because they’re so damn cute when they’re kittens… but that’s how they get you.
You should meet my Tikva. I think she may be a dog in a cat-suit. She follows me around everywhere that she feels comfortable, meows incessantly when I’m elsewhere (or in the bathroom), sleeps in bed with me, and is so happy to see me she runs smack into me. It’s almost embarrassing.
Certain breeds of dogs I might rate a little better. I think I could learn to like Greyhounds, for instance, and Pomeranians are cute. But in general, I find dogs smelly and with too much of a tendency to crap on, chew, or drool on household goods and personal possessions to ever consider letting one indoors. Also, I seem to have sensitive ears and when they bark, it’s torture. This isn’t to say I don’t think they are great friends to humankind, or make lovely pets.
Another thing that puts me off, and which I’ve learned about partially by the dog threads here, is all the controversy over training methods, who should have dogs, what dogs they should have, where to get them, etc. etc. It’s like the debates over breastfeeding and working mothers. Cats don’t require a Ph.D. in catology to raise. And they smell better.
Dogs: 100 - We wouldn’t be humans without dogs
Cats: 75 - Cats are pretty cool on their own terms, but I’m in the crowd that would rather walk & clean up after a dog than have a litter box.
I’ve wondered about those automatic litter boxes but have never had the space to try them out.
I hate all dogs if I see them. It’s not -100 because of working dogs.
Cats are hated less because at least they have a nice hunting pose before they snatch a bird at the park.
Cats: independent, interesting, clever, and when they are affectionate it really means something; fun to watch play and interact with
Dogs: smelly, gross, and dumb as a box of hammers. I allowed them 10 points, as I respect dogs that work or perform some useful function, but even then I don’t *like *them.
Dogs are a pain to walk, discipline and bathe and can be loud, so they’re not for me. But I love to interact with and pet other people’s, unless they’re smelly.
Cats are what I have in my family. I love them, appreciate their subtleties, and feel genuinely close to them, even if they’re not nuts about me.
I also have an easier time with cat people than dog people. I find them, very broadly and stereotypically speaking, more accepting of others and less concerned with social formalities. Shake, puppy! Goood puppy.
