Dogs: 100 on the basis that there are no bad dogs, only bad owners
Cats: 100 on the basis that they don’t have owners, they have staff

Dogs: 30 I can tolerate them, but I’d like them better if they weren’t smelly, licky, barky, destructive and unpredictable.
Cats: -50. They are cute, but I can’t forgive them for their casual hunting. And they smell.

Dogs: 50 – I like MY dog, enjoy walking or playing with MY dog, and the companionship of MY dog, when I have one. Other times I don’t care for the intrusion or the expense (or the smell), and I’m glad I don’t have a dog right now. Other people’s dogs are mostly a horrorshow, though some are cool. It depends a little on my mood.

Cats: -50 – Mostly, I can’t stand them. Only the fact that cats don’t interact much makes visiting a cat owner’s house tolerable, and the ones that will NOT leave you alone, getting their goddamn hair and dander all over you, are -100. But even an annoying cat can be fun to tease with a laser pointer, so they’ve got that going for them.

I like my dogs a lot, and they are a lot of fun, but they are a decent bit of work and I’ve met plenty of dogs I don’t like, though none that wouldn’t improve with even basic training.

I have a cat. An exceptionally well-behaved, personable, and friendly cat, according to my experiences with them and my friends who are cat people. Even with a great cat, I’m not getting another one when this one passes unless I have a child that really wants one. They’re half the work of dogs and not even worth that in terms of the entertainment I get from them.

I’ve got some nasty scars from serious dog attacks but none of that can change the fact that I love most dogs. Like the OP said, a happy and friendly dog can seriously brighten up my day. I love small dogs (yes, chihuahuas!) just as much as the big ones. And puppies have got to be the cutest thing nature has to offer. Plus, I have two dogs.

Cats: +10
I’ll pet them if they approach me but cat-human interaction isn’t very exciting and doesn’t do much for me. They don’t wag their tails or are happy to see you or anything. Also, cats are a lot less cute.

Dogs: 75. I like my dog and some others but not all dogs.

Cats: -50. Large, but admittedly cute, rats. With claws. Who was just walking in it’s own feces a minute ago.

I’ve actually been obsessed with dogs for most of my life, and right now I have two. But they don’t have typical ‘doggy’ (which is to say lab-like) personalities - neither are happy-go-lucky or friendly, they have almost no desire to please, and little interest in humans other than me and a couple people I’m close to. Older dog is indifferent 95% of the time unless the humans have food, in which case she’ll be your best friend until you give it to her; younger dog you can’t even bribe to be near you with treats unless he knows you. This is the type of personality I enjoy in a dog; often described as ‘independent’ and ‘catlike’.

Dogs as a group mostly have way too much drive and energy that isn’t being properly focused, and clueless owners who don’t exercise or train them well and allow them to be rude to humans and other dogs. I like dogs in theory; in practice, I don’t like being yapped at, jumped on, drooled on, clawed, mouthed (playfully), bitten, climbed on, or knocked down. I also don’t like annoying, mannerless dogs harassing my poor old dogs when we’re out. I don’t like smelly dogs, and I’m grossed out by how many dogs leave a dirty greasy film on my hands after I touch them.

Dogs are also a lot of work to own - if you do it right. I try to give mine an hour of exercise every day, they could still use more and they are geriatric. They need stuff to chew and of course they need regular trips outside to relieve themselves.

So, cats as a group are more appealing to me because they’re unobtrusive, quiet, clean and usually odorless, and easy-care. I also have two right now, and while one is a bipolar PITA who alternates between being standoffish and aggressive (I’m the only one who can stand her), the other is the sweetest, friendliest critter you could ever meet. Far more affectionate and outgoing than either of my dogs. Of course, he can get a little annoying, especially given the fact he sheds white hair like a mofo.

Cats: 90 out of 100 (-10 points for shedding)
Dogs: 50 out 100 (for the reasons mentioned above- but my own dogs, and certain individual dogs with good personalities or training, are awesome).

I am a crazy cat lady, I have 9 and it’s not enough. I have dogs too and adore them as well, but the cats win it hands (paws?) down.

The only reason I don’t have a solid 100 there is because I have met individuals of both species that I just can’t like. It may not be their fault (lack of training or abusive upbringing or just plain bad breeding leading to mental issues) but even though I feel sorry for them, I can’t actually like them.
Slight tangent: I am surprised at my own visceral reaction to some of the dog & cat hating posts. I am flabbergasted by whoever said they considered poisoning their dog - I don’t even care if it was a joke, it pisses me off. I used to think I was an unprejudiced person, but I guess I’m not after all. I find that I am prejudiced against people who hate animals.

Cats 99, I’ve always liked cats, even the stroppy ones and the antisocial ones. The best are simply extraordinary in their character.

Dogs 70 I love their enthusiasm for life but the bad tempered aggressive ones are just nasty.

I forgive both species for their smells and mess, that’s just nature innit.

Dogs: 100
Cats: 50. I am allergic to cats, so I’ve never been around them much, but I think they are interesting and attractive. If I were not allergic, I still probably would have dogs instead of a cat, but I would have spent more time with my friends’ cats so I would have more familiarity. I guess for me they are great in theory but not in practice. :frowning:

Both have advantages, both have disadvantages as pets.

And all pets have disadvantages, hence less than perfect scores ;). Vet bills, shedding/grooming, ubiquitous parasites, smells, destructiveness ( accidental or willful ), added responsibility in hectic modern lives, temperament and training issues. All pets can be the occasional pain in the ass. I think the trade-off in affection and entertainment are easily worth the inconvenience of owning them, but there is no denying they are inconvenient at times.

When I was a pre-teen it would have been 70/100 in favor of dogs, when I was a teen maybe 80/95 for dogs. But now that I’m in my 40’s a greater appreciation for cats than I had when I was younger and the greater ease of owning them has slightly trumped other dog advantages for me. Dogs are, simply put, considerably more work. If they weren’t, the scores would be about even.

Dogs are whores. Your pet dog is so loyal and hyperaffectionate as to inspire suspicion in a rational mind. When a dog gives up his time for you, it’s almost degradingly selfless. When a cat gives you his time, it’s willingly and consciously given.

And it works both ways. Dogs are more needy than cats and their feelings get hurt if you don’t want to play. Cats just move on and attack dust specks and sunbeams if you’re busy.

Dogs are great, especially mine, who are some of the lowest-maintenance animals I’ve ever owned. They’re less work than our cat. However, I have met dogs I don’t like, not many, but there are probably about 3% of dogs I don’t care for. So, dogs: 97

Cats are more of a mixed bag. I love ours, she’s a lovely kitty. But as a group, I think they’re more trouble and less likely to be friendly than dogs. So, cats 60.

Ha! I feel exactly the same as you do.

I like 'em both, for different reasons. I’ve never owned a dog, but only because, with my work, I don’t have time to raise and care for it properly, so it would not be fair to the dog.

I would say 99% to both. The thing is there a nice dogs and awful ones. Same for cats.

Sometimes it depends on the personality of the cat. Sometimes I want a cuddle and a lap cat is great, but sometimes I just want a quick pet on the head.

Same for dogs, some dogs are far too needy for my liking.

Me and cats, we just “get” each other.

Dogs lose points because they can be dangerous. They’re also a lot of work. We have a dog and we love her way too much, but sometimes we substitute the word “job” for “dog” when we speak of her. I also agree with phantom lamb that puppies are the cutest creatures on earth, but that’s because we’d have to murder them otherwise.
