I posted it in my Live Journal, open to the public so it’s not a big deal. I am not picking on you per se but your delivery and your motivation on this thread:
Again, this is not against FallenAngel as a poster, just in this specific thread. You jumped on the music to begin with and throughout. You didn’t offer any redemption which gave no person responding a chance to help you maybe see something different because it was clear from the start you chose not to see anything.
I relate it to the redneck that sees his nieghbors mowing the lawn and can’t see the value in mowing the lawn. Or the wealthy man who looks at his less wealthy neighbor and doesn’t understand why he doesn’t have 20 ft. statues of Zeus with 100 gallons of water pumping out it per hour.
You asked a question that didn’t make sense to you to begin with. You gave nothing in the way of real questions to ask why people might like Pink Floyd. It’s the delivery and I hope I have been able to make my point without being a bitch. I didn’t want to start this in the Pit but I didn’t want to high jack your thread either and this seemed like the most likely place because it could become heated.
Well, Tech’ems, you’ve just unlocked the secrets behind all forms of artistic criticism… whether it be for movies, music, books, paintings, TV shows, video games, or theatre. Art is a lot like a relationship… sometimes, the viewer and the art just don’t mix, like oil and water. That doesn’t make one or the other necessarily bad, it just means that the two happen to clash.
The problem comes when someone takes their subjective opinion on something and insist on using it as objective fact… much in the same way someone might dislike another person because they just don’t get along. Why they do this, I don’t know… could be an ego booster (“My point of view is superior to yours!”), could be sheer confusion (much like FallenAngel’s “I just don’t get it”), or maybe they’re just wired to dislike certain things.
Ah well. Whenever a Floyd criticism comes up, I just pop in Animals or Division Bell and enjoy.
I hate to be a grammar nazi, especially since I make typos and spelling errors all the time, but this one bugs the fuck out me and has become my “nails across a chalkboard” thing: it’s “moot” point/question/whatever, not “mute”. MOOT
As to the OP, I’m a little confused too. OK, so you don’t like the music. That’s OK, but what do you expect people to say? I mean, Pink Floyd is obviously an extremely popular band, and calling the music mediocre and the lyrics juvinile just seems silly to me. What sort of response is someone who posts that looking for? Me toos? You’re wrongs?
