Rating the 2011 Comic Book Superhero Movies (in hindsight)

  1. X-Men: First Class. In my opinion, this one ranks up there with the very best comic book movies. (Spider-Man 2, Iron Man, X-Men, Batman Begins, etc.) Nicely plotted, good character development, likeable characters, and kick-ass action scenes. It’s all there. I forgive the movie its anachronisms. They amount to minor quibbles.

  2. Thor. I would have never guessed, going in, that Thor would be my pick for second-best superhero movie of the summer, but danged if it wasn’t. Managed to take what was always (to me, anyway) a lot of Jack Kirby silliness, and make it into a fun ride. Well done.

  3. Captain America. This is the one I was most looking forward to, and sad to say, it disappointed me a bit. Still entertaining and worth a look, but I just don’t think Chris Evans has the charisma, charm, or acting chops for the role. I also thought the origin story dragged on way too long, and the villain and the howling commandos were underdeveloped. Decent movie, worth a ticket, but on the whole, “Meh.”

  4. Green Lantern. This one just didn’t do it for me. Again, it has partly to do with the star. Ryan Reynolds is just not likeable enough to me. The other failing of this movie is that all the focus seems to have been on CGI and 3D effects, which, granted, are pretty impressive, but the story is weak, and the villains are uninteresting. Again, still worth a ticket, IMHO, but the weakest of the bunch.

Your rankings? Also, did I miss any? I didn’t include Cowboys and Aliens, partly because I wanted to focus on superheroes and partly because I haven’t seen it, but feel free to include it in your own list.
