Ray Davies, You Are Lame!

And “Victoria” is crying out for a decent punk/metal cover version[/QUOTE

…check out The Fall’s version…

Dave Davies will be releasing a new cd on 6 August 2003 called ‘Transformation: Dave Davies Live at the Alex Theatre’ if anyone is interested.

It’s only through his website which is www.davedavies.com, though.

Quasimodem – when I saw this thread title, I had to giggle, cos I figured it was a play on the one about Gray Davis – when I first came back to the States, I misheard someone speaking about Grey Davis and thought for a minute they’d said that Ray Davies was governor of California…

I saw the Kinks live once actually, it’s a cool memory.

Does anybody else get choked up when they hear Celluloid Heroes?

end of lame post.

TeaRoses: Yes I do, and that wasn’t a lame post. Now don’t make me come up and over there to give you a big hug!

“…everybody’s in show-biz, doesn’t matter who you are.”- Ray Davies

I am interested, and I thank you, Ms Boods! I have always pondered what artistry may surface once the Davies brothers parted company.

I saw The Kinks’ Low Budget tour at Atlanta’s Fox Theatre, but for me it was an affirmation of what I already knew: Ray and Company had their fingers quite firmly on the pulse of society, and their tongues firmly planted in cheek.

God Save The Kinks, and here’s a good website to help one keep up with what’s going on in The Kinkdom:

Quasimodem – my pleasure, sir!

Dave put out a studio album of all new material last year called Bug – it’s fab.

The new live cd

As I was saying, the new live cd was remixed this summer at Konk…

This thread is so unPitlike. Somebody wanna put “Hatred” on the CD player?
Day is as light as your brightest dream
Night is as dark as you feel it ought to be

“I hate you, and you hate me!”

Q

As a bit of trivia…

Question: Did Jimmy Page (later of Zeppelin fame) actually play the legendary opening riff to “You Really Got Me” yes or no?

BBF – Jimmy Page did NOT play on YRGM – both Ray and Dave discuss this in their autobiographies, and their original producer, Shel Talmy, is on record stating that Page did not play that solo. I wish I had the cite for Talmy, alas. But both brother Davies discuss it in their own books…

Certainly - that particular matter is the subject of an awful lot of speculation.

Jimmy Page is deliberately very vague on the subject these days about any and all songs that he played on as “red hot session guitarist for hire” - primarily because he doesn’t want to hurt any egos out there.

But in the interests of fairness, I’ve never heard the great man himself indicate that he did in fact play the famous solo. It seems to a be a subject which is driven by parties other than Page and The Kinks to be honest. However, I have heard Page state in a radio interview that he did sit in on the original sessions although he didn’t elaborate on what his role was - and there’s a great deal of conjecture that he might have played the main riff and then let Dave Davies do the solo.

Mr Page may be vague because the whole period of the 60s and 70s were pretty vague for a lot of us, especially rock ‘n’ rollers.

That riff is the greatest tribute to tube amps!

And here I thought I was finally getting pitted. :frowning: :frowning: :frowning:

Indeed dropzone, indeed.

For your reference, amongst various bits and pieces in my collection, some of my prized possessions are a '68 Gibson ES335 Cherry Red, a '65 Fender Blackface Twin (the real deal), a '67 VOX AC30, and a '71 VOX AC30, along with a '71 Gibson Les Paul Custom and a '68 Telecaster Thinline.

Man, between that range of options - there isn’t a classic riff from the period that you can’t nail at the drop of a hat - with the exception of some of Pete Townshend’s and Hendrix’s work coz they were using early Marshall monsters.

My point is that it’s such a buzz to play classic guitars and amps from the period - to actually hear the real instruments instead of just the record. Never fails to impress dinner party guests I must say. My personal fave is the ES335 through the '71 VOX playing “Alright Now” by Free - but that’s another story for another thread.

In another thread recently, another poster was asking about why classic guitars and classic amps are worth so much. So I strung together a little 1:15 mp3 of the Gibson/Vox combination for him to listen to. I’m a pretty competent guitarist, so this is quite a good mp3 to download - just to hear the real deal - so many modern guitarists just go for the overkill “Limp Bizkit” sound these days - it’s sad they don’t get to hear these gorgeous tones any more…

'68 Gibson ES335 and a '67 Vox AC30.

And gorgeous OVERtones. Sounds real nice, Boo!

I came in here all ready to rip Quasimodem a new one, but come to find out this thread is actually a big Kink-y lovefest.

Here’s to Ray Davies, a musician and a gentleman, and the only rock star I have ever kissed!

Does anyone else adore ‘Art Lover’?

I thought Ray Davies had penned the most perverted lyrics in history - the first time I heard it I couldn’t believe my ears! But then I later made sense of it, and now it’s my very favourite Kinks tune.

I haven’t had a new one ripped in quite a while!

We had an Art Lover discussion here last year, and I thought the same thing you did, Reuben until these fine folks straightened me out!

Q

I need to make a correction: Low Budget was not at The Fox in Atlanta, but rather at The Civic Center.

Thanks
