Ray Donovan: New Showtime Series

Try reading for content: I’m done with the show. Also, this is an opinion forum, so take your snark elsewhere.

Evidently not.

OP here, and I disagree - I like threads that are not filled with fans (as long as they too have watched the shows!).

I am loving most of this show, but admit there are already some characters I wouldn’t mind seeing get run over by a bus. The dynamic amongst the brothers is kind of getting on my nerves - plus, I hate pretty much all films/plots about boxing, so that hasn’t helped with my love of the family business.

However, I do like Ray as the ultimate “fixer” who can go in and make everything right - except when it comes to his own family.

The show also moves along at a good clip - so if there is a subplot you don’t like, they will move on soon enough.

So while it is certainly not my all-time favorite premium channel TV series, I am happy they are coming back with a second season and looking forward to seeing what surprise(s) they have in store for the last few episodes of this season.

This show, as much as I’m interested in it, has yet to convince me that Ray’s father is even in the same league as Ray. Ray and his team prove to be very effective in accomplishing their “missions”; they are calculated and know when and how to apply pressure. However, every minute Mickey is on the screen, I feel like he’s Mr. Magoo-ing himself around creating problems for everyone else and just being an extremely big asshole. Drop Mickey, make the show about the chess match between Ray and the FBI (?) agent Van Miller and the various other shenanigans he has to clean up with the celebrities.

Apparently you didn’t watch the last few minutes of Sunday’s episode too closely…

Actually, I’m an episode behind. I’ll watch it now and report back.

OOooooK. Just watched the latest episode and it seems I have to amend this. :smack:

First, I still think Mickey is Mr. Magoo. They haven’t shown us he has any sort of plan, he’s just acting on impulse and what he perceives as a good opportunity to make a move.

I’m worried that now this show will become about brute force tactics between Ray and Mickey. Which one has the bigger stick. I’ll keep watching though.

So, I finally got caught up on this last night after the TWC black out (just now watching today’s episode.
I’m really finding Abby irritating. What’s going on Ray? What are you doing Ray? Are we in danger Ray? Did you hurt someone Ray? What’s your fucking problem Ray…shut the fuck up.
Does she not know what he does for a living? Also, her acting isn’t so hot. I wouldn’t be all that put off if a new actress showed up next year and they didn’t even mention it.

I’m curious to see if the nurse will stick around. If she does she’s going to end up as part of ‘the family’. Patching up the people that Ray hurts and she’s going to end up breaking her ‘moral code’ all over the place. When she asked Terri which hospital the priest went to, I wished he would have just said “I don’t know, Ray took him” Everyone knows he’s running the family AND he can talk himself out of anything so he could have dealt with it. Either make up some BS or tell her he killed him and explain why.

Lastly, I just noticed that Avi is Don Eladio from Breaking Bad. For those of you that don’t watch BB, that scene IS in Spanish (as opposed to being in English and overdubbed). The actor is from Cuba. In Ray Donovan his character is from Israel.

Season finale was pretty decent - wrapped some stuff up but also set up the next season.

Nice little visual of the normal, average family and a day at the beach - well, maybe not normal in the Father Knows Best style, but hey - for that family, this is about as warm and fuzzy as it gets!

Looking forward to the next season.

Every time I see that guy in anything I say “It’s Manny!” and start chanting “Leee-ver-tah!

LOL, “Is he dead?”

Same here.

So, do we think Mick is going to come back next year? I didn’t really care for his character. He was like the threat that wasn’t. Ray saw him as this horrible guy, they never really explained why Ray hated him so much, no one else saw him as a threat, he kept nosing around the family like he was up to no good, but they never went anywhere with it. I was always expecting him to take one of the kids or something, but he was always perfectly nice and then he left.
I have to wonder if he’s going to show back up and try to make amends again or if they’re going to do a Dexter style Villain Of The Season and this year it was him.

Also, and maybe I’m alone here, I wish they would clean up the writing, it always seems like it’s all over the place. I have hard time following some of the scenes. Like with Mick, I never really understood his whole thing.

It just seems…disjointed. I’m hoping that they get the script under control next year and the characters, the arcs, the relationships etc get fleshed out better.

Well, he wasn’t an evil super-villain, but he’s a messed-up, lousy damn father. He cheated on their mother, sold drugs, currently does drugs (which I haven’t seen the Donovans doing), makes deals with the FBI to sell out the family, knows his kids were molested and waits 30 years to kill the wrong guy over it. He’s inappropriate & crude. Ray’s trying to give his kids the good life he didn’t have, and his old man coming to stay threatened that in different ways. Don’t forget that Mick did 20 years for a crime he didn’t commit, Ray helped orchestrate the frame-up, and Bunchy won a judgement that gave him a large sum of money(a tempting target). Mick also stole a large sum of money from Sully before he was put away.

There’s a lot of mistrust, ill-will, and general fuckedupness about the situation that means Mick shouldn’t be trusted, though some of that has evaporated with his saving them from Sully. I do wonder what direction Mick’s character will take. I’m sure he’ll be back. I guess he’ll be much the same as he is now, only Ray’s mistrust of him will center around certain situations, and he won’t think he’s looking to ruin/kill the family just for the hell of it.

I hate the kids. Hate, hate hate the kids. Ray’s employees rock, though, and I’m glad Avi lived. I thought they were going to kill him off all season.

Ray’s concerns about Mickey were two-fold:

  1. After getting out of prison Mickey had motive and opportunity to destroy Ray’s life, and was in fact actively pursuing exactly that with the FBI guy. A secondary aspect of this is that Mickey also has motive and opportunity to go after Ray’s employer, specifically Ezra.

  2. Mickey is toxic, and will poison (not literally) anyone he has prolonged contact with. Look how badly Bunchy does when Mickey’s around. Ray doesn’t want that anywhere near his kids.

The last two episodes brought it all together nicely for me. I did have hope for Mickey too until he pulled out the bottle of booze… I guess if he comes around a little it will help next season.

Ray told him that prison was the only place safe for him those 20 years … either he disagreed or that hadn’t dawned on him since he was going to give Ray up to the FBI.
