Wow. What a pleasant surprise this game is. I’ve never been a fan of the Rayman character as he always seemed like a generic mascot dude and the games have never really impressed me. I picked up Rayman Origins though ( http://xbox360.ign.com/objects/077/077706.html ) based on all of the stellar reviews I’ve seen because I figured they were built up on hardcore platformer hype.
I’m glad I did.
What a great break from the (admittedly great) CoD, BF3, Uncharted, Gears, Skyrim etc… The graphics are amazing and it really feels like you are playing a cartoon. After all the drab colors of the aforementioned games I forgot my HD TV could even display these colors anymore. The presentation is just phenomenal. The sounds is top notch and the graphics are very eye catching.
The platforming is also incredibly tight. This is a serious contender against SMB Wii. Actually it beats it hands down if you like a challenge because it is NOT an easy game. The controls are flawless and you really feel like not making a jump or hitting an enemy is always your fault, never the controls.
Every level has the obligatory collectibles (coin type things) but you can also do speed runs of each level and (I think) show them on a leader board.
You’re probably thinking $60 is alot for a sidescrolling platformer in the days of $10-20 ones on XBLA and whatnot. I can tell you there is ALOT of content in here and the levels are definitely replayable, and there are lots of them.
If you like platformers AT ALL you owe it to yourself to at least rent this game to bow your eyes out. Very nice surprise and is a perfect compliment to all the dark games of this fall. There may be a demo on XBL or PSN. Not sure.
