RC Vehicles: Pointless Diversions

      • So lately I am colosally bored, and have a bit of a budget to blow. I have seen stories online of late of people who are building RC vehicles with cameras. One story I saw was a tiny helicopter about as big as a sparrow, it fit in the palm of your hand but I think that would run over my budget. I see there are wireless security cameras available now for in the area of $125, and so I am wondering what sort of RC land vehicle to buy to stick one on.
  • There are trucks and at least one tank that I have found. I would be more concerned about mobility than speed. In the past I know that the tanks could get around better than the regular RC trucks, but now they sell these “bigfoot”-style trucks. I haven’t seen any of these things up close lately. The one tank I can find is the Hobby Zone one for $100 (one listing): http://www.remotecontrolhobbies.com/trucks/hobby_zone_remote_control_army_tank.htm
  • I looked around but can’t find any other options as far as tracked vehicles, is there anywhere else I should be looking? I’ve looked at a few of the big hobby stores online and they either reference the Hobby Zone tank or nothing at all. I don’t need it to “look” like a model tank, I just want a tracked electric RC vehicle, preferrably ready to go. Anybody know anywhere else I should be looking?

Go here: RC Tanks

I have two of these tanks sitting on the shelves above my desk, purchased from this company, as well as a LOT of spare ammo.

The tanks are a bit flimsier than I’d like (one has a tread issue already, the result of an extended head-on wrestling match) but for $50 I think I got my money’s worth.

The little missile tank is of much lesser quality. But still fun.

There are two issues you may wish to consider regarding tread over wheel. First, treads come off with extreme maneuvering, and you’ll find yourself getting up to replace them frequently if you’re really having fun with it. Secondly, the ‘wheel depth’ is practically non-existant, meaning that you’ll easily get hung up on various things you try to drive over. Fortunately the treads power is enough to free itself from most of these situations, but still… keep an eye out. Oh, and dirt and sand and especially water are very very bad things to try driving on.

But the joy of driving a little tank around and actually being able to shoot down plastic army men makes it all worthwhile!
