Anyone know where to find a decent starter RC Car for $180 or less?

Looking to get my son a real RC car, not a Toysrus garbage one, for Xmas but don’t know anything about them really. It seems like they either come in sub-100 toy clunkers that use AA batteries or $200+ beginner hobbyist cars.

I’m trying to find a decent kit car with controller and battery pack for around $180.

Anyone smart on this subject?

I use to work in a hobby shop the decent kits to get everything running was about 400$ CDN. This would include the car, the two channel radio and battery ( run time about 10 minutes). The kit themselves would have to be assembled. If you’ve ever built a model kit before, about the same difficulty level. The kid will love this part, the parent maybe not so much. You could also buy gas powered rc cars. Louder, much louder but longer running time.

We stayed away from the “box kits” because people would come back when something broke down and needed parts. They weren’t available, so we only sold kits that could be fixed with parts. Invariably they will break down. With a budget of 180$ you’re in this category. It’s been awhile, maybe it’s changed and parts are available now. I’d go to your local hobby shop and avoid Radio Shack and see what they have.

Tamiya is one of the top companies for good quality RC cars. This prices you see here are just for the car. Doesn’t include radio and battery.
