Re foot hurts after walking bunches

Reading a few different threads about people whose various extremities hurt, I decided I would ask the rest of Doperdom this question.

To get things out of the way, IANAD, YANAD, MDIAD, TINMA, etc.

Two weeks ago, a friend of mine came to visit for the weekend. The weather here was unseasonably warm, we’re talking spring in late November in a region that is known for 1m snowfalls (anthropogenic climate change be praised!) Anydangway, with the beautiful weather, I decided to take her around to the different parks and geology and history museums. These are almost entirely located in the mountains and, being the weekend, buses were few and far between. That being the case, we decided it was the perfect excuse for a day of hiking. We went walking along the old salt road, up through the mountains and, all in all, logged a good 25-30km of hiking that day. Lots of fun.

Unfortunately, the day after that hiking, my left foot started hurting like %$&!. It was so bad that I had serious pain walking to work (I usually walk 2km or so to get to the station to go to work everyday). The school nurse saw my limp and suggested I go to the hospital, so I went to an orthopedic hospital where they did an xray, poked at my foot a bit, and then basically said, “I dunno what’s wrong. Don’t walk so much, stupid.”

But I like walking/hiking/etc. And it’s been two weeks, I’ve done everything I can to keep off that foot, but it still hurts (albeit not nearly as much as the first week or so). Does anybody know what the deal is? Why would my foot hurt so much despite showing nothing on an xray? Is the doctor just oblivious?

God bless your heart if you read this wall o text

Bursitis? I got it after taking a record walk in slightly ill-fitting shoes. Painful quite immobilizing. Basically a small bag of slime that cushions and protects your every joint gets irritated from (for instance) repetitive stress on said joint (mine was the big toe base joint).

I hadn’t even considered bursitis. That would certainly explain why it didn’t show up on an xray. The pain is on the outside of the foot, near the small toe, which, from what I’ve read, doesn’t show up as a common site of bursitis. Now that I think more about it, the shoes I wore that day were not the best fitting shoes and they do seem to have an unfortunate manufacturing design/defect that puts excess pressure on the outside of my left foot. It is excruciating to wear them in my foot’s current condition, so I’ve switched to wearing a pair of well-fitting running shoes or some comfy padded Florsheim’s for work.

I remember having a similar experience when I was a wee lad. My family had gone on our yearly trip to Cedar Point, which meant an entire day of walking and standing in queues. That night I got out of bed and my foot (left foot, even) was in so much pain that I had to crawl to my parent’s room to tell them about it (only to be told “it’s not that bad, go to bed”) I was pretty much off my feet for 2 weeks (worst summer break ever in my childhood). Bursitis is one of those things that if you get it once you are more likely to have it recur, so perhaps this is the case?
