Re-reading the Port Huron Statement

Re-read the Port Huron Statement this week-end, as one does. (Yes, the compromised second draft.) Drafted in 1962, it strikes me as relevant still today, apart from the language, such as the use of “man” for humanity and a certain “studentese,” and topical references.

If you’re interested, you can read it here http://www.progressivefox.com/misc_documents/PortHuronStatement.pdf

Thoughts?

My initial thought was “Dude!” Or, uh, “his Dudeness”.

I’ll have to dig a bit deeper into the statement to comment further.

Yes, indeed, thus the reference to the compromised second draft

It doesn’t have an Eagles soundtrack, does it?

No, but have you seen my CCR tape?

I’ll read it after I have a White Russian, man.

Sure, it’s as relevant as ever, maybe more than ever. Which is not a good sign.

My thought exactly.

Hey, careful, man, there’s a beverage here!

Apparently this is the manifesto of a student political movement from the 60s?

My apologies for assuming the Port Huron Statement was well-known, given it is the entire point of the documentary The Big Lebowski.

I knew what you were referring to but it’s news to me that the Port Huron Statement actually exists.

The Port Huron statement was mentioned once, briefly, in the movie. I always thought it was fictional.
