Imagine it’s 2019 and the Democrats control Congress. They impeach both Trump and Pence, making Pelosi President. She then nominates H. Clinton as VP, and Congress approves. Pelosi immediately resigns, making Clinton President.
The question is, with what details to this scenario would there be the least amount of Republican outrage? I’m assuming zero outrage is completely improbable, but under the right circumstances zero acceptance is not.
Too outlandish to even consider. On the off chance that the Democrats managed to successfully impeach both Prez and VP, there’s no way a Prez Pelosi would choose anyone as disliked as Clinton.
Impeaching Trump would be fine. Impeaching Pence would be a big problem unless they had a really good reason. That would actually be known as a coup.
But if you did get to President Pelosi and she stepped down for Clinton, I think many Republicans would breathe a sigh of relief. President Clinton is many times better than Nancy Pelosi.
I down with a coup, at this point! I just hope some young Marine Whitehouse guard doesn’t try to take him out, therefore taking one for the team. And being executed! That would be sad.
If it’s 2019, what’s the point in Pelosi nominating Clinton as her VP, then resigning? Clinton would only hold the office until Jan. 20, 2021. If she wanted to keep the office past that, she’d have to stand for nomination in 2020, and that’s not exactly certain to happen. She couldn’t hope to have any long-standing effect on the nation in less than two years. It would purely be an exercise in vanity.
I voted for Clinton in both the 2008 and 2016 primaries and in the 2016 general, but the scenario you propose would make me physically ill and despair for the fate of our nation. Clinton lost, she’s out and never coming back. If Pelosi becomes pres I would cheer. If she immediately turns around and puts Clinton in charge, then I would have to start taking all those conspiracy theories about the Clinton deep state political machine seriously.
Even assuming all of the improbable stuff you are talking about, my question would be…why would Pelosi resign? I won’t even ask why she would make Clinton her VP, but why, being the President would she then just resign?
Zero outrage is, of course, completely improbable…and not just from the Republicans. I don’t even think most Democrats would be happy (more like picking their jaws off the ground before their collective heads also explode). I voted for Clinton and I can’t say this would make me either happy or that I get the logic. Oh, sure, I’d MUCH rather have Clinton President than Trump, but that’s like saying I’d be good with just about anyone besides Trump as President.
Why would Pelosi resign? Just to be nice to Hillary?
OK, suppose the Blue Fairy grants your wish, and the Democrats have a majority in the House and two fucking thirds of the Senate. What is Hillary going to do that Nancy Pelosi can’t?
I’m imagining that Pelosi does this to put the popular vote winner in the White House, something many people have said should have been the correct result. And where does this idea that everybody dislikes Clinton come from? When did 66 million voters change their mind? I know I didn’t. If there’s any dislike from them it’s because of her failure to get what they think should have been an easy win. But you can be sure that if this scenario were to play out many of those same people would feel that she got what was rightfully hers.
Even most of Clinton’s supporters supported her because she’s a Democrat and far better than Trump. A few, I suppose, supported her because she’s a woman. In both cases, once Pelosi got in the White House, it would be Mission Accomplished. For what conceivable reason would Pelosi abdicate in her favor?
With all due respect, adaher, I don’t think you exactly have your finger on the pulse of what Republicans in general think about Hillary Clinton.
