I’d argue that Flashman’s a somewhat more complicated example than this. There are certainly lots of historical figures - Queen Victoria, Palmerston, Custer, etc. - who directly appear as characters in the series and whom you can reject on the above grounds.
But there are also lots of historical figures who we know that Flashman met, but who are only mentioned much more indirectly. So we know that he made a pass at Angela Burdett-Coutts, witnessed the execution of Maximillian of Mexico and took part in Pickett’s Charge. But none of these people are really characters in the plots of the novels. These are incidents from other parts of his life that Flashman mentions in passing. Such passing mentions do seem in keeping with the spirit of the OP in that thread.

I’ve been thinking lately (uh-oh), if you grew your own watermelons and while they’re still small baby melons if you put rubber bands and segmented them off, would they grow into a string of small melons instead of one large melon? See how convenient that would be? When you’re ready to eat the melon you just cut off one section and the rest stays intact. Think of the money you would save. Should I market this idea or just grow my own? Obviously, I don’t need an answer fast.
