Since some members are unaccustomed to the Announcements section, I have created this thread to draw attention to it. On each of the forum pages, there is an announcement section below the forum title on the left, which in turn is below the Straight Dope logo.
There is also a link to the announcement in the paragraph above.
And here is the entire text of the announcement from Ed Zotti:
Not that I think this announcement might be important or anything.
There is no need to respond to this thread. I’ll leave it open so Nickrz and I can bump it to the top from time to time.
And is suddenly occurs to me that some people have been posting for long enough that they have forgotten how to change their profiles.
On the top right of each page, under the “Straight Dope Message Board” label, the “New Topic” or “New Topic” and “Reply” buttons (depending on whether you are at the top, in a forum or in a thread), you will find several selections, one of which is “profile.” Go into “profile” and you can change your password there. Write Down Your New Password Somewhere That You Won’t Lose It.
You’ll have to give us a few days for an answer to that. The people who actually know the answer have been working literally around the clock since Monday to get the board working.
Let the good folks finally cop some Z’s, and then we’ll have more for you. For now, just do as the man says.
Last week I received an e-mail from another on-line service telling me that they changed my password because they had their list of passwords stolen. Maybe the same thing?
Are the passwords still safe from the first time you asked us to changed them? The board was down for about a day, then it went back up, and I saw the message to change my password, so I did, then it went down again. Should I change it again?
At the risk of being jumped on by staff for answering questions, Chief Crunch, I’ll report that I asked TubaDiva the same question in an IM an hour or so ago and she suggested that, to be on the safe side, if you had changed your password during the brief time the board was up the other day, you ought to go in and change it again.
Hmm, RealityChuck, are you sure? When I click profile, the first thing I get is a screen asking for my SN and password; once I input that I get a second screen that has a whole bunch of info, starting with my SN and then my password right below it. That’s where you change it. Give it a try, and if it still comes up weird send an email to TubaDiva and ask.
