I extended the time in the settings – it had been half an hour.
Apparently that’s not working so well either.
I’ll change it back.

Resumed again, though this time it took a full minute to retrieve the new posts, so it might be my connection, or something.
And again. I just logged on to find everything posted since logging off last night Read.
I keep mentioning this not to be a pain, but to document it for the tech people in case it helps.
Lately, it seems like I have about a 50% chance of getting what I want when I hit ‘New Posts’. The other half of the time, the server will do something screwy and decide to reset my ‘Last Visited’ time - so instead of seeing the last day or two of posts I haven’t read, I see the last Two Minutes.
This is not helpful, and it happens All The Damn Time.
Please fix it.
Current thread over here
Thanks! Glad I’m not the only one.
Merged duplicate threads.
Another incident where I logged on to find it reset to an hour or so earlier, even though I hadn’t been by since last night.
If it’s useful at all for troubleshooting (assuming there’s anyone working on it), here’s how it usually happens to me:
I’m browsing along happily in forum X, and select “jump to forum Y” from the dropdown menu.
Then it hangs for a good long time before it finally goes through. Sometimes the hangup happens when opening a thread, but it’s usually a forum change.
Forum Y looks fine. But when I move again to forum Z, I find that all the little envelopes are greyed out. So the problem isn’t visible immediately after the hangup, but on the next jump after that. FWIW.
A third time I logged in and found the “last visited” time not a minute earlier but also not when I was last here. That may be a different problem; I’m wondering if I should change my password.
ETA: And then, sure enough, when I went to New Posts it had reset itself.
Just did it again.
Reading a thread in The Pit, scrolled back to the top and clicked the main Pit link, and Hey Presto! looks like I’ve read everything.
Hrmphf.
Still doing it. Actually it’s done it several times since I last bitched a while ago; I can’t be bothered complaining every time.
I think I mentioned this before, but in case I didn’t - if you could make a way to manually edit the “last visited” time it would help a little bit, even if you can’t fix the actual bug.
And again…
New one just happened to me today (around 10:12pm Central, in case that helps any logs). Read through a couple forums, had my last visited time reset as happens all too often, went through another forum and while I was doing so, got a couple “Connection Reset by Server” errors when trying to get to threads. After that, my last visited time was reset back to what it was when I started. But only for a little bit, then it jumped forward again.
Any thought being given to just disabling this altogether, and relying on just clicking the “mark all as read” link? This is the only forum I’ve been to that uses a timer, and while it’s a great idea if it works, I’d rather do the manual method than having it break all the time.
The other vB forum I frequent doesn’t ever automatically mark threads as read. I find it annoying to go to lunch and come back and find everything marked as read. When I’m finished with the board for the day I just use the **Quick Links - Mark Forums Read **facility.
Can’t we just turn this automatic thing off entirely?
And again.
Me, too. It’s always precipitated by a delay, then when the page loads everything is marked as read.
It differs for me. Sometimes I log on, and everything since logging off is marked as Read.
But tonight, everything was flagged as Unread, I looked briefly in one thread, then all the others were suddenly marked Read. This happens less often than the other.
And today too.
This is getting much worse. After a few days of no problems, both yesterday and today I logged in about 10:30 or so in the a.m. to find that only threads posted since about 10:20 were showing as unread. Even though I had not been logged in since the night before. How could it set the timer for a time when I was not even on line??? I have to say, this is getting to be a real drag.
